Briefs: HB surf team takes second

Huntington Beach High finished runner-up, Edison took seventh place, and Marina was ninth at the 2014 National Scholastic Surfing Assn. State Championships that ended Sunday at Church, San Onofre.

Huntington placed second in the High School Varsity Team division, behind San Clemente which won the title for the sixth-straight year. Dana Hills was third, Carlsbad fourth, Mira Costa fifth, San Dieguito sixth, Edison seventh, Newport Harbor eighth, and Marina was ninth. In the High School Varsity Mens division, Oilers Tomas King was third, Jake Saenz fifth and Kirk Weissinger sixth. In the Longboard division, Huntington’s Jeremy Guilmette took fifth. In the High School Varsity Women’s division, Samantha Cendro of Huntington placed fifth.

In the High School Junior Varsity Team division, Huntington was fourth, Edison fifth and Marina sixth in a division won for the first time by Ventura. Hailey Chance of Huntington took fourth place in the High School Junior Varsity Women’s division. Edison’s Christian Wilerth won the High School Junior Varsity Longboard division title. Max Seiersen of Huntington was fifth and Keith Hibbs of Marina sixth in longboard.

Two teams from both Sowers and Dwyer finished among the top eight in the Middle School Team standings, a division captured for the 10th consecutive time by San Clemente Shorecliffs. Sowers “A” was fourth, Dwyer A sixth, Dwyer B seventh, and Sowers B eighth. Sophia Cendro of Dwyer placed sixth in the Middle School Girls division. Max Vandermulen of Sowers took fourth, Jovan Smith of Dwyer sixth, and Kyle Cannon of Sowers was seventh, in the Middle School Longboard division.

San Diego State won the College Division for the sixth-straight year.

USA Junior Surf Team selected for Worlds

Surfing America, the National Governing Body for the sport of surfing in the USA, recently announced its rosters for its final travel squad for the USA Junior Surf Team that will compete April 3-14 at the International Surfing Assn. (ISA) World Junior Surfing Championships in Salinas, Ecuador. Kanoa Igarashi, 16, of Huntington Beach, was one of four athletes named to the Boys’ Under-18 Team. The Junior Surf Team coaching staff includes Micah Byrne of Huntington Beach and Kevyn Dean of Huntington is the team’s medical director.

Splashball at HB High

Huntington Beach Water Polo Club is accepting registration for its 12-week Splashball program.

The program is open to youth ages six to 14 and will be conducted at the Huntington Beach High pool.

The cost is $175 per player and participants will be taught water and ocean safety skills and the fundamentals skills and rules of swimming and water polo.

Golf tourney registration open

Registration is now open for the 9th annual Baron Football/Michael Musso “Moose Invitational” Golf Tournament presented by the Fountain Valley High Football Boosters.

This year’s event is June 23 at Mile Square Golf Course (10401 Warner Avenue, Fountain Valley). The tournament will consist of a four-person scramble, longest drive contest, closest-to-the-pin contest, and a putting contest.

The cost is $150 per golfer and includes green fees, cart fees, practice range, door prizes, gift bags, buffet lunch and banquet dinner.

The annual event helps raise money for the Fountain Valley High Baron football program and the Michael Musso Memorial Fund. Musso, a 2004 graduate of Fountain Valley High, lost his life in a car accident July 29, 2005. Through this fundraiser a scholarship is given to a four-year Baron football player each year.

Youth Volleyball in HB

United States Youth Volleyball League (USYVL) has announced it will accept registration for the 2014 spring season in Huntington Beach starting April 2.

Registration will run through June 7 at the Huntington Central Sports Complex. The cost for the eight-week season is $150 per child. Discounts are available for families that sign up more than one child.

“One of the things that separates the USYVL from many other youth sports programs is the level of encouragement and ‘fun’ factor that we bring to the kids,” Randy Sapoznik, executive director of the USYVL, said in a statement. “Because of our inclusive, easy going environment, it’s not uncommon to hear from parents who say this is the only sports program their child plays in. Also, the league operates in a coed fashion, which works extremely well. Volleyball allows boys and girls the opportunity to play together in a competitive sports environment. You’ll see kids at all skill levels in the league. For any child, it’s a great way to stay physically and emotionally fit.”
