Swimmers shine in Texas

Golden West Swim Club athletes competed last weekend at the American Short Course Championships at Austin, Texas, and returned home with top finishes.

Nora Deleske, a 15-year-old freshman at Edison High, took first place in the 400-yard individual medley. Deleske touched the wall in a time of 4:19.12, one-half the length of the pool ahead of the second-place finisher.

Deleske also took fourth place in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:17.54., Last month, she took first in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:16.02) at the California/Nevada Sectionals.

The Golden West men’s 4x100 medley relay team took third in the event with a time of 3:27.88. The team includes Thomas Gillespie (backstroke, 52.90 seconds), Wade Nelson (breaststroke, 57.04); Bradley Toland (butterfly, 50.45) and Nate Torres (freestyle, 47.49).

The quartet also took second in the 4x100 freestyle relay. Torres, (47.82), Toland (46.28), Viera (47.74) and Gillespie (46.87) swam a 3:08.71.

Red Wings 6, Nuts 6

The Red Wings rallied from a 5-1 deficit by scoring five runs in the top of the fifth inning, and held on in the bottom-half of the inning, to forge a tie in a season opener Friday for both teams that was called after five innings due to darkness.

Red Wings pitcher Stone Gabriele shut out the Nuts in the third and fourth innings before the Red Wings offense took a 6-5 lead in the top of the fifth. In the bottom of the fifth, Cade Hart led off with a triple for the Nuts, but Gabriele retired the next two hitters.

Jack Rockefeller followed a line drive to shallow center field, the ball falling in despite a lunging attempt by the Red Wings’ Jack Smith. Hart scored to tie the score but Smith threw out Rockefeller trying to reach second base to end the game.
