As openers go, Marina High's softball team couldn't have asked for a better debut.
Behind a potent offense and a first-game pitching gem, the Vikings were all over Kennedy, winning, 25-1, in nonleague play March 6 over the host Fighting Irish.
Several Vikings powered the offense led by senior Tera Blanco, who hit a grand slam and drove in six runs. Blanco also registered her initial pitching win in her first game, getting the win on a one-hitter.
Junior Emili Olague also homered in a three for three performance that included five RBIs. Senior Desiree Hagberg had hits in all four of her at-bats, and senior Keala Cordeiro went three for four.
Marina, ranked 10th in CIF Southern Section Division 1, started play Monday at the Laguna Hills Tournament and routed San Clemente, 6-1. Olague tripled and hit another home run.
"We are planning, preparing and producing," Marina Coach Shelly Luth said.
The Vikings (2-0) continue tournament play Thursday. They play host to El Toro in a 3:30 p.m. nonleague game Tuesday.
Also at the Laguna Hills Tournament, Huntington Beach pounded out a 7-0 victory Monday over Dana Hills. Senior Sammie Vandiver went three for four with a double, two runs batted in and a run scored, sophomore Kristina Inouye had two hits and an RBI, sophomore Alyssa Horeczko scored twice, stole two bases and drove in a run, and sophomore Anna Kufta doubled and scored a run for the Oilers.
Huntington continues Laguna Hills Tournament play Thursday and begins play Saturday at the Northwood Tournament. The Oilers also play host to Foothill for a 3:15 p.m. nonleague game on Tuesday.
•At the Costa Mesa Tournament Saturday, Ocean View erupted for nine first-inning runs and went on to overpower University, 13-1, at TeWinkle Park. Junior Olivia Russ went three for three, walked twice, scored three runs and had an RBI. Senior Madison Garcia went three for three with an RBI, junior Billie Derleth had two hits and two RBIs, junior Jade Bustamonte and senior Tobi Salzman both had two hits and an RBI, and freshmen Kylie McElligott (single) and Grace Mosher each drove in a run.
The Seahawks (3-2) play a 3:15 p.m. nonleague game Thursday at Newport Harbor, and resume play Friday and Saturday at the Costa Mesa Tournament.
