Seahawks start right

Ocean View High girls’ softball got its 2014 season off to a big start Tuesday by overpowering visiting Costa Mesa, 10-0.

Senior co-captain Emily Long homered and drove in three runs, senior co-captain Tobi Salzman had three hits, and junior Billi Derleth had two hits and drove in five runs for the Seahawks whose offense came alive in the third inning.

Ocean View hosts Tustin at 3:15 p.m. Thursday in nonleague play.

Edison and Huntington Beach had their season openers rained out Saturday. Marina opens its season at 3:15 p.m. Thursday at Kennedy.

Baseball

Edison started its 2014 season Tuesday and lost, 3-2, at Mission Viejo. The Chargers scored single runs in the first and second innings but stranded runners in both innings.

Junior Kevin Ando and senior Phil Knapp both had a hit and RBI, and senior Brian Schales had two hits including a double for the Chargers.

“We let a couple lapses on the mound lead to three runs which took away from a good performance from our pitchers, Nate Madden and Stephen Knapp,” said Cameron Chinn who was making his head coaching debut at Edison. “Offensively we struggled to break the game open early after getting runs in the first and second and leaving guys on base both innings.”

The Chargers play at 3 p.m. Thursday at Aliso Niguel.

•Fountain Valley split its first two games of the new season Tuesday. The Barons took the first game of a nonleague doubleheader at Sonora, 3-0, but dropped the season game, 4-3.

Senior Scott Shultz and juniors Justin Navarro (1-0) and Justin Cobb combined for a shutout, senior Brock Lundquist drove in two runs and seniors Junior Aguilar and Dillon Persinger both had two his in the opener.

Lundquist hit a solo home run in the second game.

“We didn’t execute in Game 2,” Fountain Valley Coach Deric Yanagisawa said. “We stranded a bunch of runners in scoring position. We couldn’t get a clutch hit in Game 2. Sonora did a great job executing late in the game.”

Fountain Valley takes on El Toro at 7 p.m. Thursday in a 7 p.m. Loara Tournament game at Glover Stadium in Anaheim.

•Ocean View took on Calvary Chapel Monday to begin its season, and took a pair of one-run victories from the visiting Eagles, 1-0 and 4-3.

In the first game, senior Dustin Fisher threw six innings of shut out baseball, striking out four. Fisher (1-0) also had a hit and scored the only run in the game when he led off the Ocean View-half of the second inning. He went to second base on a balk call, was advanced to third on a grounder by sophomore Grant Rockefeller, and scored on a squeeze bunt by sophomore Braydon Salzman.

In the top of the seventh, junior Michael Giacone came out of center field to take over on the mound after Fisher gave up a pair of singles. The Eagles loaded the bases but Giacone registered a strike out for the second out, then forced a pop up out to senior Ramon Sepulveda who took over in center field for Giacone.

“It was a real nail-biter,” Ocean View Coach Shane Borowski said. “We’ve shown in the fall and winter games that we can win close games, and today (Monday) was no exception. I’m really proud of our execution in that game. Our offense was all but nonexistent, and we found a way to scrape together a run out of thin air. Our pitching and defense took over from there.

“Credit to Calvary Chapel. They were equally as good on the mound and in the field. The run just happened to land in our favor.”

Giacone started on the mound in the second game and lasted three innings. He allowed three hits and struck out three without allowing an earned run. He was relieved by junior Steven Cotton who gave up two hits and struck out for in 3 1/3 innings and recorded the win. Cotton was relieved in the top of the seventh by sophomore Brandon Nicholson who took over with Ocean View holding a 4-1 lead.

Fisher went two for three with a home run and double and Salzman went four for four and drove in his second run of the doubleheader.

“Steven was tremendous for us,” Borowski said of Cotton. “He is coming off a deep bone bruise which sidelined him for close to a month, and to see him have that success is a tribute to his character. I’m really happy with his performance.

“Wow, these one-run games are intense. I’m very proud of our kids, how they handled the adversity, the challenges today. We spoke last week about how winning games comes down to which team can handle the pressures better. We stayed poised today (Monday), and it paid off with two wins.”

•Huntington Beach and Marina had their season openers rained out Saturday. The Oilers start play Thursday at Foothill, and the Vikings begin play Friday at the Loara Tournament.
