Edison takes control of Sunset

Edison High continued its lead atop the Sunset League girls’ soccer standings Tuesday by getting past visiting Newport Harbor, 3-2.

Aubrey Grandon, MacKenzie Cerda and Tatiana Moreno all scored, with Grandon and Moreno scoring off rebounds of shots by Cerda, for Edison, which is ranked 10th in CIF Southern Section Division 1.

“We played an imperfect game but got the result which is crucial these last parts of league,” said Edison Coach Kerry Crooks, whose team is in first place in league at 5-1-1.

Huntington Beach posted a victory Tuesday on its Senior Night by defeating visiting Fountain Valley, 2-1. Laura Lainson scored off an assist from Sawyer Koelsch, and Kassidy Simpkins also scored for the Oilers, who are 3-2-2 in league, good for second place, and 9-3-4 overall.

Huntington Coach Raul Ruiz recognized the 2014 senior class of players, Lainson, Simpkins, Jane Potter, Halie Bergeron, Kendall Georgatsos, Ryann Giampietro and Francesca Rand, for their “commitment, dedication and contribution” to the Oilers’ program.

In a Golden West League game Tuesday, Ocean View fell, 3-1, at Santa Ana. In previous league action, the Seahawks (9-9-3 overall, 3-2-2 league) played Loara to a scoreless result.

In girls’ soccer action Thursday, Fountain Valley plays host to Newport Harbor (3 p.m.), Ocean View travels to Segerstrom (3 p.m.), Edison plays at Los Alamitos (3:15 p.m.), and Marina plays host to Huntington (3:15 p.m.), and Ocean View.

Boys’ Soccer

A second-half goal by Ty O’Connor set up by Connor Gordon lifted Edison to a 1-0 victory Friday at Marina. The win allowed the Chargers, ranked fourth in CIF Southern Section Division 1, to improve to 6-1 in league and 18-1-1 overall.

Edison plays a key league game at 5 p.m. Friday when it plays host to league-leading Los Alamitos (6-0-1 in league, tied No. 10 CIF Southern Section Division 1) Friday.

In other Sunset League games Friday, Huntington Beach was edged, 2-1, in overtime by visiting Newport Harbor, and Fountain Valley was shaded by host Los Alamitos, 2-1.

In a Golden West League game Friday, Ocean View dropped a 4-2 home match to Santa Ana.

In addition to the Los Alamitos-Edison game, other boys’ soccer games Friday include Fountain Valley on the road at Newport Harbor (3 p.m.), Ocean View playing at Westminster (3 p.m.), and Huntington hosting Marina (5 p.m.).

Girls’ Water Polo

In Sunset League action Jan. 29 at Newport Harbor High, Edison routed Fountain Valley, 18-1, Huntington Beach was defeated, 14-3, by Los Alamitos, and Marina was downed, 14-1, by Newport Harbor.

In Edison’s win over Fountain Valley, the Chargers took an 8-0 lead after one quarter. Every field player scored for the Chargers (9-10, 1-2 in league) with freshman Chloe Kunst scoring four goals and sophomore Julie Harrison three goals. Sierra Page (six) and Josette Santos (five) combined for 11 saves.

Edison, is ranked No. 7 in CIF Southern Section Division 1, plays eight games in a 10-day period starting with a Wednesday league game against Marina. All scores from Wednesday’s three Sunset League games weren’t available at press time.

The Chargers also start play Thursday at the Irvine Southern California Championships, and close out Sunset play Wednesday against Huntington.

“We have a very difficult and mentally challenging eight games in 10 days coming up,” Edison Coach Diggy Riley said. “Our mental toughness, competitiveness and playing as one unselfish unit will be tested during this stretch.

“We need to stay extremely focused with minimal distractions over these remaining regular season games. It is going to be tough, very tough. Our girls are training very hard, so I know they will be ready and are up to the challenge.”

Sabrina Nguyen scored twice and Emma Stephens once for Huntington (1-2 league) in its 14-3 loss to sixth-ranked Los Alamitos.

Savannah Vukelich scored for Marina (1-2 league) in its 14-1 loss to second-ranked Newport Harbor (3-0 league).

In Sunset League finales at Newport Harbor High Wednesday, Marina and Fountain Valley play at 5 p.m. followed by Edison against Huntington at 6:05 p.m., and the league champion will be decided when Newport Harbor battles Los Alamitos at 7:10 p.m.
