Edison edges Barons

Edison maintained the lead in the Sunset League girls’ soccer standings Tuesday by fending off determined Fountain Valley by a 1-0 score at Edison.

Amanda Erickson took a long pass from defender Bailey Webster in the 1 1/2 minutes of the game and scored what turned out to be the winning goal.

The Chargers lead the Sunset race at 4-1.

The Barons, whom Edison Coach Kerry Crooks said played a “solid game,” have not given up more than a single goal in each of their first five league games.

Fountain Valley, ranked seventh in CIF Southern Section Division 1, dropped its first league game and is now 2-1-2.

The teams close out the league and regular seasons Feb. 12 at Fountain Valley.

“With five games remaining , it will be a tough race to the title,” Crooks said.

•Huntington Beach found itself in a two-goal hole Tuesday at Los Alamitos, but the Oilers rallied in the second half to earn a 2-2 tie in another Sunset League match. Sawyer Koelsch scored off an assist by Kassidy Simpkins to trim the Los Al lead to 2-1. With one minute remaining in the match, Simpkins scored the game equalizer.

The result put Huntington at 2-2-1 in league and 8-3-3 overall.

Oilers Coach Raul Ruiz praised his entire team’s effort, saying his squad put in “quality minutes and support. Ruiz said Sarah Steinhaus turned in a “key defensive play” that prevented the game from slipping away from the Oilers, and that goalie Kate Hart had a “great performance.”

“To be successful as a team, a team player must exert an effective positive influence upon her teammates by believing in each other, to the point where she will sacrifice herself and fight to the end, sacrificing personal glory for the welfare of the team,” Ruiz said he told his players during their pregame meeting.

•Ocean View took its Golden West League record to 3-1-1 Tuesday by blanking host Orange, 2-0. Casey Dooley and Hanna Messina scored goals, Cintia Ruiz and Kaci Montoya each picked up an assist, and goalie Malia Hayes registered nine saves for the Seahawks who are 9-8-2 overall.

Orange goalie Emily Pontiakos turned in a big performance with 15 saves.

“We played well, struggled to finish, [and] we created many chances,” Ocean View Coach David Deaton said.

In a previous league game Jan. 23, Ocean View lost its first league game, 2-0, at Westminster.

In Sunset League games Thursday, Marina hosts Edison (3 p.m.), Fountain Valley hosts Los Alamitos (3 p.m.), and Huntington travels to Newport Harbor (3:15 p.m.). Also Thursday, Ocean View is on the road at Loara (3 p.m.).

Girls’ Water Polo

Marina went to JSerra Tuesday for a nonleague game, and defeated the host Lions, 9-5. Savannah Vukelich scored three goals, Kendyl Riley (two assists) and Cathryn Lynch (one assists) both scored twice, and Alyssa Hubbs had 10 saves for the Vikings (18-2).

•Ocean View won its fourth Golden West League game Tuesday by sprinting past visiting Orange, 12-1. The Seahawks, ranked second in CIF-SS Division 7, are 4-1 in league and 10-4 overall.

“I was very proud of the girls’ disciplined performance,” Ocean View Coach Melissa Fernandez said. “Our goal was to focus, to make each possession an important 0ne and limit the defensive breakdowns, and we did a great job of that.”

In a previous league game, Ocean View routed Westminster, 22-3, at the Ocean View pool Jan. 23.

The Seahawks play a 3:15 p.m. league game Thursday at Loara.

In Sunset League games next Wednesday at Newport Harbor High, Marina takes on Edison at 5 p.m., Fountain Valley faces Los Alamitos at 6:05 p.m., and Huntington battles Newport Harbor at 7:10 p.m.

Boys’ Soccer

Edison improved to 4-1 in Sunset League play and 16-1-1 overall Friday by blanking visiting Huntington Beach, 3-0. Connor Gordon scored twice, Adam Hepburn once, Devin Anderson had two assists and Brendan Fix two saves for the Chargers who are ranked fourth in CIF Southern Section Division 1.

Marina squared its Sunset record at 2-2-1 Friday by scoring twice in the second half to break away to a 2-0 home victory over Fountain Valley (0-5). Christian Cordell and Trevor Anderson scored and Shadi Asad had two saves for the Vikings.

Friday’s Sunset schedule has Marina at Edison (3 p.m.), Huntington hosting Newport Harbor (5 p.m.), and Fountain Valley at Los Alamitos (5 p.m.). Ocean View hosts Santa Ana in a 3 p.m. Golden West League game Friday.

Football

Marina High has reopened its search for a new head football coach, Marina Principal Paul Morrow announced Jan. 23.

The school had announced Jan. 9 the naming of Kevin Oberlander as its new head coach of its football program. Morrow said that during the hiring process, the Huntington Beach Union High School District learned that Oberlander, 30, currently the head football coach and assistant athletic director who heads the physical education department head at Upland Western Christian High, did not possess “full teaching credential status,” Morrow said.

“We need a full-time teacher and football coach here on campus,” Morrow said. “Our students deserve that and the program needs that stability.

“Kevin [Oberlander] is a great guy and an awesome coach who is still in the process of attaining his full teaching credential. He’ll get there, but I couldn’t deliver a full-time teacher to fill our position in a timely manner. We wish him great success and the school that does land him in the future, will be lucky to have him.”
