OV looks to bounce back

It was an early showdown in the chase for the Golden West League girls’ water polo title, and Tuesday’s battle between Ocean View High and Segerstrom featured another key element: it pitted the top two ranked teams in CIF Southern Section Division 7.

This time around, No. 2 got the best of No. 1.

Second-ranked Segerstrom led the entire way Tuesday and the visiting Jaguars went on to take a 10-3 victory. The Jaguars (3-0 in league) led, 4-2, at the half, increased their lead to 7-2 early in the fourth quarter, and kept No. 1-ranked Ocean View to its lowest goal total of the season.

Raquel Zorich, Shannon Graham and Elena Isogawa scored for Ocean View, which fell to 2-1 in league.

Segerstrom figures to replace Ocean View at No. 1 when the next CIF Southern Section weekly rankings are released Monday.

“Segerstrom is a solid team but today was one of those days for us where nothing seemed to go right,” Ocean View Coach Melissa Fernandez said. “We never got anything going on offense. Typically we don’t make that many bad passes and turnovers, which led to their transition game.

“I’m generally not a fan of a double round of league play, but I’m glad we get a shot at them again.”

The teams meet Feb. 6 at Segerstrom.

Ocean View play host to Westminster in a 5 p.m. league match Thursday.

•In Sunset League girls’ water polo games played Jan. 15 at Newport Harbor High, Marina pulled out a 12-10 victory over Huntington Beach, Edison was edged, 9-7, by Los Alamitos, and Fountain Valley lost, 17-2, to Newport Harbor.

A second half rally by seventh-ranked Edison fell short against fifth-ranked Los Alamitos in a game the Chargers lost, 9-7. After trailing, 6-2, at the half, the Chargers outscored the Griffins, 5-3, over the final two quarters.

Delaney Cleveland netted five goals, Sabrina Jensen scored twice, and Josette Santos had seven saves for Edison which dipped to 0-2 in league and 8-10 overall.

The Chargers started league play Jan. 8 and lost, 3-1, to fourth-ranked Newport Harbor.

“It seems that in many of these big games, we have a three-to-four minute lapse on the defensive end that has cost us goals, and perhaps the game itself,” Edison Coach Diggy Riley said. “We keep stressing that we need to be focused 28 minutes to have a chance of beating these top ranked teams.

“The second half, I thought we played amazing at both ends.”

The Sunset League race continues with another triple header Wednesday at Newport Harbor High: Marina takes on Newport Harbor at 5 p.m., Huntington meets Los Alamitos at 6:05 p.m., and Edison faces Fountain Valley in the night cap (7:10 p.m.).

Girls’ Soccer

Ocean View and Segerstrom needed overtime Tuesday to decide their Golden West League match which ended in a 1-1 tie at Ocean View.

Kristina Cooley scored off an assist from Kaci Montoya, and Malia Hayes finished with 12 saves for the Seahawks who are 2-0-1 in league and 8-7-2 overall.

“Our team played great defense,” Ocean View Coach David Deaton said. “We had many (scoring) chances but hit the post too many times.

The Seahawks had won their second league game Jan. 16 by blanking visiting Santa Ana, 2-0. Casey Dooley scored both goals, Cintia Ruiz had an assist and Malia Hayes had six saves.

“We played well, [and] good work rate and hustle is what put us over the edge,” Deaton said.

Ocean View travels Thursday for a 5 p.m. league game at Westminster.

In Sunset League action Monday, Edison scored a pair of second-half goals to get past Huntington Beach, 2-0, and Marina and Fountain Valley played to a scoreless tie.

In Edison’s win at Huntington, Danielle Thomas scored off of a free kick by Cassidy Helenihi free kick with 12 minutes remaining in the game. MacKenzie Cerda sealed the win by scoring unassisted in the 80th minute.

The Chargers improved to 3-1 in league, and 5-4-5 overall.

Kate Hart had eight saves for Huntington, which is 2-2 in league.

“We really showed a lot of perseverance in this game,” Edison Coach Kerry Crooks said. “Huntington Beach is a very aggressive side and really has some speed. But, having 20 free kicks, we eventually found the back of the net.

“My assistant [coach], Kaitlin Thulin, and I are proud of the progress this young team has made these last couple weeks.

Sunset League games resume Tuesday with Marina hosting Newport Harbor (3 p.m.), Huntington hosting Los Alamitos (3:15 p.m.), and Edison hosting Fountain Valley (5 p.m.) in a battle for first place.

Boys’ Soccer

Sunset League games on tap Friday have Marina hosting Fountain Valley (3 p.m.) and Edison hosting Huntington Beach (5 p.m.).

In Sunset games last Friday , Edison lost, 3-1, at Los Alamitos, Huntington edged Marina, 2-1, and Fountain Valley was shut out, 2-0, by Newport Harbor.

In a Golden West League game Friday , Ocean View was edged at home by Segerstrom, 2-1. The Seahawks are on the road for a 5 p.m. league game Friday against Orange at Fred Kelly Stadium.

Wrestling

Fountain Valley placed ninth among 94 teams in the final team standings at the Five Counties Invitational it hosted Friday and Saturday. Barons junior Andrew Morgan was one point shy of reaching the Saturday’s semifinals in the 152-pound weight class, and finished third in his division. Three other Barons placed: junior Stone Escobedo (seventh, 170), junior Ben Madrid (195, eighth), and senior Bryant Vasquez (220, fourth).

Marina was won of four teams to tie for 60th-place. Buchanan won the team title and Corona Santiago took second place.
