Basketball teams stay busy during break

With the start to the Sunset, Golden West and Academy league title races getting underway next week, local prep boys’ and girls’ basketball teams are wrapping up nonleague play in tournament and nonleague action.

Teams wrapped up play in holiday tournament action Monday. League play starts Jan. 9 for girls’ teams, and Jan. 10 for boys’ teams.

•Edison: The Chargers (11-2) made their way to the championship game of the Estancia/Tustin Classic after slipping past Western, 55-54, on a last-second basket by junior guard Jake Haar in Saturday’s semifinals. Junior guard Brae Ivey led Edison with 17 points.

The Chargers defeated Servite, 54-46, for the championship in Monday’s tournament final.

Edison started the tournament Dec. 26 and routed Canada Archbishop O’Leary, 96-64. Junior guard AJ Garrity scored 22 points, Ivey had 20 points, junior guard Derek Molina 15 points, and Haar and freshman guard Randall Walker also were in double figures with 14 and 12 points, respectively.

Garrity also had a game-high 25 points the following night, and Ivey scored 12 points, in a 68-51 quarterfinal round win Friday over LACES.

Prior to competing at the Estancia/Tustin Classic, the Chargers took the runner-up spot at the Maui Invitational Dec. 23.

•Fountain Valley: The Barons dropped a 72-65 nonleague game Dec. 24 to visiting Westminster.

Fountain Valley returns to action Monday, hosting Segerstrom in a 7 p.m. nonleague game. The Barons wrap up nonleague play at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday against visiting Beckman.

•Marina: The Vikings went 1-2 to start the Orange Holiday Classic. They defeated Burbank, 44-40, in their opener Dec. 26. Senior guard Derek Mallard scored a team-high 15 points in the win.

Marina plays host to Liberty Christian at 7:30 p.m. Friday in nonleague play.

•Ocean View: The Seahawks completed play Monday at the 24th annual Torrey Pines Classic, where they were edged, 56-54, by La Jolla Country Day. Senior guard Angel Nieves hit four three-pointers and had a team-high 18 points for the Seahawks. Senior forward Tristan Wenschlag scored 13 points and senior guard Evan Bunin finished with 12 points.

Ocean View takes on host El Toro at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Orange County North/South Challenge.

•Brethren Christian: The Warriors won their 10th game of the season Saturday by rolling past Loma Linda Academy, 85-63, in the semifinals of the MaxPreps Holiday Classic. Junior guard Brandon Bryson and sophomore forward Cameron Griffin both scored 24 points, and senior forward Patrick Poss had 10 points, to lead the scoring.

BC won the tournament title Monday with an 82-66 victory over Riverside Christian.

The Warriors take on Laguna Beach at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Orange County North/South Challenge at El Toro High.

Girls’ Basketball

•Edison: The Chargers advanced to the championship game of the Larry Doyle Tournament by defeating Warren, 56-40, in a semifinal game Saturday. Sophomore forward Justine Modde and senior forward Loli Gomez scored 14 and 13 points, respectively, for the Chargers who lost to Orange Lutheran, 45-37, Monday for the tournament title.

Also at the tournament, Edison scored wins over Clovis (61-35) and Aliso Niguel (73-36).

•Fountain Valley: The Barons won two of their first three games at the Costa Mesa Winter Classic, getting their second tourney win Saturday, 53-34, over Irvine. Senior post Emily Krause and sophomore post Mikalia Pacis both scored 10 points for the Barons.

•Huntington Beach: The Oilers went 3-0 to start the Costa Mesa Winter Classic to reach Monday’s championship game.

Huntington Beach beat Lakewood, 59-37, for the tournament title.

The Oilers reserved a spot in Monday’s final by routing El Toro, 54-35, in a semifinal game Saturday. Senior guard Paola Roa scored 21 points and freshman forward Frankie Wade-Sanchez scored 15 points in the win.

Huntington previously defeated Mission Viejo (53-49) and Rocklin (66-55) at the tournament. Roa scored a game-high 25 points in Friday’s win over Rocklin.

•Marina: The Vikings won their second game at the Larry Doyle Tournament Saturday by getting off to a hot start against Yorba Linda and polished off the Mustangs, 73-45. Senior guard Danielle Kennedy led the way with a game-high 17 points. Senior forward Natasha Mangham scored 14 points and senior guard Madison Yutkins had 13 points.

Marina opened the tournament Dec. 26 and rallied past San Ramon, 65-60. Yutkins scored 21 points to go with seven rebounds, and Mangham scored 15 points and collected 22 rebounds.

In their second tournament game Friday, the Vikings fell, 41-33, to Orange Lutheran which pulled away in the fourth quarter for the win.

Boys’ Water Polo

Four local players have been named 2013 All CIF Southern Section in boys’ water polo.

Huntington Beach junior Alex Wolf was named the goalie for the Division 1 team. Ocean View seniors Ryan Tran and Michael Dworsky, and junior Jordan Salgado, were named to the Division 7 team.
