Marina was a 1-0 winner against Huntington Beach. Edison and Los Alamitos played to a 1-1 tie, and Fountain Valley was edged, 3-2, in overtime by Newport Harbor.

Vikings Coach Sarah Harding said Emma Walker “came up strong in the second half,” which included a huge reflex save off a Huntington corner kick.

Walker recorded seven saves.

“This was an intense match between two talented and passionate Huntington Beach teams with opportunities from both sides,” Harding said. “We are fortunate and happy with the results as well as the play throughout the game.”

Marina was able to bounce back from a 2-0 loss to Los Alamitos in a Jan. 3 league opener.

Mackenzie Cerda scored a second-half goal and Alison Jahansouz had four saves for Edison in its 1-1 standstill with host Los Alamitos.

Madison Gomez headed a ball in on a cross from Dakota Griggs in the first half, and Addie Espinoza scored on a pass from Kasey Reeves in the second half, to tie the score against Newport Harbor. The Sailors scored in the first half of overtime and went on to take a 3-2 win.

Tuesday’s 3-2 loss was the second in league play for the Barons who on Jan. 3 fell by that score to Huntington Beach. Lindsey Archer, Lana Bermel and Kassidy Simpkins scored goals and Bermel, Dottie Rhotten and Carolyn Archer had assists for the Oilers (6-3-3). Kate Hart and Jane Potter both had three saves.

Gomez scored off a cross from Reeves, and Espinoza scored in the second half from the Barons. Alison Marlow had five saves.

Huntington Coach Raul Ruiz called his team’s performance “outstanding with great tactical team discipline.”

Ocean View played its Golden West League opener Tuesday and played Santa Ana to a 2-2 tie. David Deaton said the tie score was the “first” with the Saints in his six years as head coach of the Seahawks.

Jade Kratoval and Liliana Martinez scored goals, Casey Dooley had an assist, and Emma Malsy registered 16 saves for Ocean View, which is 5-5-1 overall.

Edison: The Chargers went 1-0-1 during the first week of Sunset League competition. They dropped their opener, 1-0 on Jan. 2, to Huntington Beach, and played Newport Harbor to a 1-1 tie Friday.

Hunter Kelley scored on a header off a free kick with the assist going to Jeff Wood in Edison’s tie game against Newport Harbor.

“After a good preseason this is not the start to league we were looking for,” said Edison Coach Charlie Breneman, whose team was 8-5-3 overall after the two league games. “It is still early and hopefully we can turn things around this week and get some good results.”

Fountain Valley: The Barons got their Sunset League season off to a successful start by winning their first two matches and shared first place with Los Alamitos.

Fountain Valley (7-4-2) started league play Jan. 2 and edged Marina, 2-1, behind goals by Oscar Fernandez and Kenji Louer. Goalie Ryan Brown had five saves. The Barons followed that win with a 4-1 victory against Huntington Beach Friday. Fernandez scored twice, Brett Nomura and Joseph Soliman each scored once, Brown had two saves and fellow goalie Joseph Loranger had two saves.

The two wins moved the Barons to 7-4-2 overall. They have given up only four goals in their last nine games.

“Our team is playing very well and hard,” Fountain Valley Coach Rick Brown said. “Earlier in the season we had a rash of injuries, as our players return we are playing well as a team.”

Fountain Valley plays host to Los Alamitos in a league showdown at 3 p.m. Friday.

Huntington Beach: The Oilers (4-6-2) split their first two matches in Sunset League play, shutting out host Edison, 1-0, on Jan. 2, and losing, 4-1, at Fountain Valley Friday.

“The boys play a possessive style of soccer that builds from the back, and we have had the majority of the ball in every game, except the Fountain Valley match where we were just terrible in the first half,” Huntington Coach Sean Dick said. “We create numerous opportunities. We just need to stretch the net more often.”

Huntington plays host to Newport Harbor at 5 p.m. Friday.

Ocean View: The Seahawks took on Santa Ana in a Golden West League opener for both teams Friday, and fell, 5-1, to the visiting Saints. Senior center-midfielder Jairo Pineda scored for the Seahawks who are 4-5-5 overall.

Huntington Beach was one of three teams to win its Sunset League opener Jan. 2 during triple-header action at Newport Harbor High.

The Oilers, ranked No. 10 in CIF Southern Section Division 1, bolted to a 10-0 first-quarter lead on Fountain Valley and went on to post a 20-2 victory over the Barons. Megan Furry scored four goals in the win.

“The girls were focused and ready for this game,” Huntington Coach Brian Anderson said. “Our seniors are on a mission this year.”

In the other two Sunset openers, Edison fell, 11-5, to host Newport Harbor, and Marina was shut out, 17-0, by Los Alamitos.

Edison fell behind, 7-2, by the half against a Newport Harbor team that is ranked third in Division 1.

Melissa Balding led the Chargers, ranked eighth in the division, with three goals. Risa Burke scored twice and goalie Josette Santos had 10 saves

“I was very pleased with our girls defensively,” Edison Coach Diggy Riley said. “Newport, known for their high-paced offense, did not score a single counter-attack goal on us. We had our JV team scrimmage against the varsity the entire week in swimming fins, trying to simulate Newport’s quickness and speed. It really helped us.”

Edison took on host Irvine in nonleague action Saturday at the Woollett Aquatic Center, and scored a 7-3 win over the Vaqueros. Burke and Sabrina Jensen both scored twice, Balding, Natalie May and Lyndsie Williams once apiece, and Santos had five saves.

“Our defense continued to be the star,” Riley said. “‘We struggled offensively throughout the game, but I kept stressing to the girls that when we are having difficulty scoring goals, we need to play that much more tougher defense, which we did.”

In Sunset League games on Wednesday at Newport Harbor, Fountain Valley plays Los Alamitos at 5 p.m., Huntington Beach and Newport Harbor tangle at 6:05 p.m., and Edison and Marina square off at 7:10 p.m.

Ocean View: The Seahawks, who start the New Year as the No. 1-ranked team in CIF Southern Section Division 7, started Golden West League play Tuesday on a winning note by defeating Santa Ana, 14-4.

Wrestling

Fountain Valley: The Barons (9-1) took their Sunset League dual meet opener Jan. 3 by defeating Huntington Beach, 57-24. They also earned a fifth-place finish Saturday at the Southern California Challenge at Tustin High.

“We are a very close team, very young at a few weights,” Barons Assistant Coach Dennis Piramo said. “Our goals include winning league, and making a run at a CIF title.”

The Barons have three wrestlers among the best in Orange County. Piramo said senior team leader Steele Escobedo (145 pounds), a returning CIF champion, is ranked No. 4 in the CIF Southern Section and 14th in the state. Senior Josh Madrid (132) and sophomores Andrew Morgan (132) and Stone Escobedo (160), brother of Steele Escobedo, are also ranked in the county.

Marina: The Vikings claimed a close victory in their Sunset League dual meet opener Jan. 3, when they edged Los Alamitos, 35-33.

Ryan Evans (106) won by pin and both Stuart Brown (113) and Peter McCoy (138) won by decision, as the Vikings improved to 8-5 overall.

Evans, Brown and McCoy are freshman, and defeated upper class opponents to secure key points for Marina.

Seniors Colin Navickas (160), Elijah Gonzales (182) and Zach Young (195), are ranked among the top five wrestlers in Orange County, Marina Coach Chris Rasmussen said.

“It was a huge victory, especially, during the holiday break,” Rasmussen said. “All of my wrestlers sacrificed their break to eat right and work hard in practice, they put the team first. We had seven freshmen and sophomores in the lineup that night and they all did what was expected of them, stay off their back and keep matches close, and our upper classmen pinned our way to victory.”

Marina plays host to Huntington Beach on senior night at 5:30 p.m. Thursday .

Ocean View: The Seahawks went 1-1 in its first two Golden West League matches after splitting last week against Orange and Segerstrom.

The Seahawks won their opener, 39-38, against Orange, and lost, 43-36, to Segerstrom.

Senior Jason Correa (138) has been a key leader for the Seahawks. Correa, who has reached the CIF Southern Section tournament the past two years and entered the week with a 16-4 record, earlier this season won his division at the Long Beach Poly 24-man tournament. He also has placed third in his division at both the Mater Dei 24-man and Ontario 24-man events.
