Edison keeps on rolling, now 10-0

Edison’s top-ranked boys’ soccer team continued its undefeated run to the start the 2010-11 season Monday by blanking La Serna, 7-0, and host Laguna Hills, 2-1, in pool play at the Trabuco Tournament.

In the 7-0 win against La Serna of Whittier, Bajj Chela scored twice and Faris Barudi, Tyler Bigenho, Sean Thompson and Matt Steinhaus added goals. An own goal was scored by La Serna as the Lancers attempted to defend against a throw in by Tyler Smith.

Laguna Hills jumped out to a 1-0 lead over Edison, but goals by Mitchell Alvarez and Chela gave the Chargers a 2-1 win and a 10-0 record. Edison goalie Scott Campbell had several key saves to keep Laguna limited to their single goal.

In a nonleague game played Dec. 22, Edison defeated visiting San Clemente, 4-1. Trevor Verone and Sammy Huerta each scored twice as the Chargers wiped out a 1-0 deficit.

At the 24th annual Marina Holiday Classic boys’ soccer tournament Monday, Huntington Beach and Fountain Valley both split two games.

Max Talbert scored off a Sam Hart assist in Huntington’s 3-1 loss to Cabrillo of Long Beach. Talbert scored twice and Hart, Cayse Cruz and Derek Weiser once each and Robert Cornwall had five saves as the Oilers came back later in the day to down San Marcos, 5-2.

Fountain Valley rallied in the second half but couldn’t overcome a 3-0 halftime deficit against Anaheim and dropped a 4-3 game to the Colonists. Steven Ryan scored all three of the Barons’ goals. Ryan and Ethan Morrow both had a goal and assist and Joseph Soliman scored twice as Fountain Valley bounced back to blank San Bernardino, 4-0.

Local youth leads polo team to title

Connor Turnbow-Lindenstadt of Huntington Beach helped lead the Orange County Water Polo boys’ Under-12 team to a division championship Sunday at the Commerce Holiday Invitational at Santa Ana Valley High. OC Water Polo won the 24-team event by outscoring its six opponents, 78-27, and defeated Huntington Beach Water Polo, 11-5, in the semifinals.

The boys’ U12 team, currently ranked No. 1 in its age group, is seeking a goalie and experienced field players. Team tryouts are at 5 p.m. Monday and Wednesday at JSerra High.
