Marina Holiday Classic in full swing

The Marina Holiday Classic boys’ soccer tournament got underway Tuesday at Marina High. Several local teams are competing at the week-long event.

On the first day, Huntington Beach dropped a 3-1 match to Santiago/Garden Grove but came back to beat Fullerton, 2-1. Fountain Valley shut out Tustin, 4-0, and played Whittier to a 1-1 tie.

Edison advanced to the final of the Mustang Cup at Trabuco Hills High by defeating Santa Ana, 1-0, Tuesday on a second-half goal by sophomore midfielder Hunter Kelly. The Chargers started the tournament Monday by playing host Trabuco Hills to a 1-1 tie and later that day, shut out Chino Hills, 1-0.

Senior forward Drew Parrish scored off an assist from Trevor Verone in the Trabuco Hills game and Parrish scored off an assist from Mikey McClymonds in the win over Chino Hills.

Girls’ Soccer

The Excalibur Tournament, hosted by Foothill, started Tuesday. Edison fell, 2-0, to Chaminade and recorded a 3-2 win over El Toro. Marina was shut out by both Canyon/Anaheim (3-0) and Sunset League rival Newport Harbor (1-0).

Fountain Valley played two games Tuesday at the North OC Classic at Downey High. The Barons dropped a pair of 3-1 games to Valencia/Placentia and Cabrillo of Long Beach. Sophomore defender Whitney Hinnant scored on a header off an assist from junior midfielder Dakota Griggs in the Valencia game and Griggs also picked up an assist when she fed junior midfielder Madison Gomez for a score on a corner kick set play against Cabrillo.

In a nonleague game played Dec. 20, Fountain Valley defeated Woodbridge, 1-0, when sophomore defender Brittany Stevens headed in a corner kick by Griggs.

Ocean View took third place at the Ocean View Tournament last week, going 2-1 at the event.
