The Edison boys’ soccer team, ranked No. 1 in CIF Southern Section Division 1, increased its winning streak to start the season to seven by scoring a 3-0 nonleague victory at Capistrano Valley last Friday.

Mitchell Alvarez and Jacob Rushing scored and Scott Campbell had four saves for the Chargers, who have outscored the opposition, 28-1.

The win against Capistrano Valley was the second 3-0 triumph in three days for Edison against a South Coast team. On Dec. 15, the Chargers shut out visiting Dana Hills.

Edison headed into the holiday break on a winning note having defeated Dana Hills, 13-8, in nonleague play Friday.

Alys Williams had five goals to lead all scorers. Williams, who set a school record Dec. 4 with 13 steals in a nonleague win against Rosary, also had seven steals. Haley Kunert and Melissa Balding each scored four times and Sydni Estrella had five saves for the Chargers, who maintained the lead throughout and then put the Dolphins away in the fourth quarter.

“We knew (going into our game) that they were a very strong team (and) winning in their pool is not an easy task,” Edison Coach Diggy Riley said. “They have a great fan base with a lot of pride and they are always loud.”

The 3-2 Chargers, ranked eighth in Division 1, return to action Dec. 30 to face Santa Margarita in a first-round game at the Newport Harbor Holiday Cup tournament.

“We have a long break, 10 practice days, to ready ourselves for the always competitive Holiday Cup,” Riley said.
