In the first week of the 2010-11 boys’ basketball season, Edison High has already taken on two Sunset League foes.

Too bad for the Chargers that neither game will count in the upcoming race for the league championship.

Edison opened up play Dec. 6 at the La Quinta Tournament against Marina, and held on for a 40-38 season-opening win over the Vikings. On Saturday, it took on Huntington Beach in the championship game of the tournament and emerged with a 66-57 victory.

Dylan Garrity hit four three-point shots and recorded a game-high 24 points, Zach Bauer had 14 points and Dreon Barlett added 11 points for the Chargers (5-0) in the title game.

Garrity was named tournament’s Most Valuable Player and Bauer made the all-tournament team.

Andrew Tenbrink scored 14 points and Jordan Reise had 10 points for the Oilers.

Reise and Dirk Cason represented Huntington on the all-tourney team.

“We were very fortunate to come out with the victory in a great game,” Edison Coach Rich Boyce said. “Both teams played outstanding and both represented the Sunset league well.

“It will be a tough league upcoming as Marina, Fountain Valley, Newport (Harbor) and Los Al are all playing well.”

Edison’s road to the final also included wins against Long Beach Wilson (60-52) and host La Quinta (73-50) in semifinal-round action last Friday.

Huntington (3-1) reached the final by defeating Calvary Chapel/Santa Ana (66-46), JSerra (54-43) and in overtime over University (64-61). Reise had 12 points and Rory Aldana and Cason scored 11 and 10, respectively, in the win against Calvary Chapel. Reise scored 19 and Vincent Oe had 14 in the win against JSerra. Against University, Aldana scored on a layup with just under five seconds left in regulation to tie the score and send the game to overtime, where the Oilers opened with a 7-0 run and then hung on for the win.

Tenbrink had 13 points, Mackey Clustka tallied 12 points and Oe finished with 11 points against the Trojans.

The Oilers trailed Edison by just two points at the half of Saturday’s championship game but were outscored in the third quarter, 22-13.

“We didn’t play very good, but that’s a credit to Edison and them executing their game plan better than we did,” Huntington Coach Fabian Luna said. “Hopefully, we can take this and learn from it and become better down the line. We just stopped doing the things we did well and it cost us. But I told our guys the championship we want is not won in December and we need to regroup and move forward.”
