Holmes Era starts with win

The Fountain Valley boys’ basketball team successfully launched its 2010-11 season and the Roger Holmes era at his alma mater Monday by defeating Santa Ana, 76-63, at the Orange Coast Optimists/Pio-Turion Tournament at Western High in Anaheim.

The Barons led by 20 points with three minutes to play before the Saints hit three consecutive three-point shots to narrow the final margin.

“It was a good start for us,” Holmes said. “We were able to play a lot of guys and start getting some experience. We played well for most of the game but have plenty of work to do to get better.”

Judd Chamaa hit four three-point shots en route to a game-high 23 points for Fountain Valley. Nathan Moss scored 15 points and Zack Richartz scored 12 points. The Barons also received six points, eight assists and seven rebounds from Sean Myers, eight points and nine rebounds from Jacob Bracken and eight points and eight rebounds from Zach Matar.

The Barons hit 11 three-point shots in the game.

In girls’ basketball openers Monday, Ocean View fell to Beckman, 44-31, in a first-round game at the Whittier Christian Tournament, and Brethren Christian, which got a game-high 20 points from Madison Desler, was defeated, 63-49, by Costa Mesa at the Corona del Mar Tournament.

Tournament of Champions starts Monday

The 40th annual Tournament of Champions boys’ basketball tournament starts Monday at Ocean View, which is hosting the event for the 24th year, Seahawks Coach Jim Harris said.

Teams competing for the title, won last year by Serra, are: Ocean View, Corona del Mar, Orange Lutheran, Foothill, El Toro, Crespi, Loyola, Clovis West, Clovis East, Long Beach Jordan, Narbonne, San Bernardino and Temecula Valley.

The tournament begins at 3:30 p.m. Monday with Ocean View taking on Long Beach Jordan.

In last year’s championship game, Serra defeated Ocean View, 72-65.

Winter Classic Soccer tourney begins Friday

The Ocean View Winter Classic Girls’ Soccer Tournament begins Friday with games played at both Ocean View and Huntington Beach High.

The event, in its 28th year, includes tournament play for varsity, junior varsity and frosh/soph teams.

Sixteen teams are entered in the varsity tournament. Local schools include Ocean View and both the Huntington Beach varsity and junior varsity teams. Other varsity entries are Brea Olinda, Connelly, Tustin, Long Beach Millikan, Godinez, Riverside Poly, Valencia, Laguna Beach, Calvary Chapel, Fullerton, Garden Grove, Rosary and Savanna.

Riverside Poly is the defending tournament champion.

In addition to opening-round play Friday, the tournament continues Saturday, Monday and Dec. 10-11 and the finals are Dec. 13.
