Rustlers win state title in men’s water polo

The Golden West College men’s water polo team won the California Community College Men’s Water Polo State Championship title Saturday by defeating Long Beach City College, 9-6, at the Cerritos Aquatic Complex in Cerritos.

Golden West freshman Bero Rusz was named the men’s tournament Most Valuable Player. He scored five goals in the title-game victory over Long Beach City College and had 11 goals in two state tournament games. Rustler teammates Marko Madaras and goalie Taylor Lapin also made the state’s all-tourney team.

The Rustlers, who finished the year 31-2, won the state championship for the 22nd time.

Golden West also finished runner-up to the women’s state title Saturday. The Rustlers (24-5) fell, 6-4, to Riverside Community College (32-1) in the final. Gabriela Cabrera and Kellie Guerin represented the Rustlers on the women’s all-tourney team.

Vikings headed to Fresno

The Marina High girls’ cross-country team is heading to Fresno this weekend for the CIF State Cross-Country Championships. The Vikings qualified for state after finishing in fifth place in Division 1 Saturday at the CIF Southern Section Cross-Country Championships at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut.

The Vikings turned in a team time of 1-hour, 32 minutes 57 seconds. Edison placed 11th with a team time of 1:35.27. San Clemente won the team title in 1:31:44.

Individually in the girls’ Division 1 race, Marina senior Laura Hollander led the local contingent with a sixth-place finish with a time of 17:49 and Edison junior Haley Seward (17:56) finished 10th. .

Fountain Valley finished in 16th place in the boys’ Division 1 race with a team time of 1:21.58. In the race, Marina junior Richie Soto (15:07) placed 10th and Edison junior Jeff Thies (15:30) was in 22nd place.

Ocean View hosts hoops event Saturday

The first Coaches for a Cure basketball event at Ocean View High is Saturday. Five varsity games are on tap, starting with a 1 p.m. girls’ match-up between Ocean View and La Quinta. Four boys’ games follow: Marina-Calvary Chapel (2:30 p.m.); La Habra-Magnolia (4 p.m.); Westminster-Compton Centennial (5:30 p.m.), and Ocean View-Foothill (7 p.m.)

Ocean View Athletic Director Tim Walsh said that proceeds from this year’s event, and future Coaches for a Cure events, will benefit those struggling with various diseases.

Untouchables complete undefeated season

The California Futbol Club Untouchables Black Under-13 boys’ soccer team recently completed an undefeated season. The team, led by head coach Ed Montoya, started the year by winning several summer tournaments, including the Cerritos Challenge Cup, the Laguna Niguel Silver Friendly Tournament, the FC Long Beach Cup and the Rancho Santa Fe Summer Attack Tournament.

The Untouchables also went undefeated in the Silver West bracket (12-0-2), where they outscored their opponents, 43-6. They were the only undefeated team among 40 Silver West teams.

The Untouchables will compete in two postseason tournaments, starting with the Thanksgiving weekend Surf Cup. They’ll also compete at the National Cup in February.

The Untouchables are: Edgar Adame, Paul Ambrose, Esteven Bahena, Oscar Catalan, Anthony Cortes, Trevor Fried, Rodrigo Herrera, Michael Madrid, Justin Omori, Jonathan Ornelas, Richard Montes, Matthew Paniz, Abel Perez, Israel Rosete, Hayden Street and Drake Sueda.

Sign ups open for youth softball

Huntington Beach Girls Softball, an Amateur Softball Assn. recreational league, has opened registration for its spring 2012 season. Girls ages 5 to 14 are welcome to join the league. The 2012 season runs January through May, with practices and games held at Circle View Elementary School (6261 Hooker Dr., Huntington Beach). Fastpitch softball taking registration

South Huntington Beach Girls Fastpitch Softball is holding sign ups for its 2012 spring season. SHB is an Amateur Softball Assn. recreational softball league for girls ages 5 to 14. Online registration is available at https://www.shbgfs.org through Dec. 31.

In-person registration dates are Sunday, Dec. 4 and Dec. 11 (noon to 3 p.m.) and Dec. 21 (6 to 9 p.m.) at First Class Pizza, 18671 Brookhurst St., Huntington Beach.
