Seasons wrap up for area teams

Four local teams had its season end in CIF Southern Section playoff action in the past week.

In boys’ water polo, Huntington Beach and Ocean View suffered quarterfinal losses Saturday. A third local team, Edison, was eliminated Nov. 9.

Huntington Beach traveled to Manhattan Beach for its second Division 1 playoff game to face Loyola. The Mission League champion and fourth-seeded Cubs came away with a 15-11 victory at Mira Costa High. Senior attacker Max Shultz and junior attacker Jovan Jeremic both scored three goals and senior goalie Brandon Lucia had nine saves for the Oilers, who finished the year 25-6.

The Oilers, who defeated Ventura in a first-round game Nov. 9, entered the postseason as the No. 2 team from the Sunset League.

“I love these guys,” Huntington Coach Brian Anderson said. “They are making it so that Huntington Beach is going to be good for a long time in aquatics. They have a set a precedent.

“While we did not get the outcome we wanted this year, we still had the best season Huntington Beach has seen. As long as our community sees the value in Huntington Beach water polo, we will continue to mold exceptional student athletes.”

Golden West League champion Ocean View hosted Don Lugo of Chino in a Division 7 quarterfinal showdown Saturday, and the visiting Conquistadores scored two goal late to knock off the No. 4-seed Seahawks, 14-12. Senior Steven Kornahrens scored eight goals for the Seahawks, who finished 20-11.

Edison, an at-large entry to the Division 1 playoffs, was eliminated by Mater Dei on Nov. 9, 16-5. Senior attacker Tony Morelli scored twice and senior attacker Brent Bazzell, sophomore cover back Justin Harrison and sophomore attacker Alec Niederland each scored once for the Chargers. Senior Nate Sfreddo had eight saves in goal.

Edison had defeated Notre Dame/Sherman Oaks in a wild-card game Nov. 8.

The Chargers’ 17-11 season is the best finish by a Diggy Riley-coached team. The program also was in the postseason for the first time in consecutive years, Riley said. In both years, the Chargers won wild-card games and lost first-round games to top-ranked Mater Dei.

“I could not be more proud of these boys this season,” Riley said. “The coaching staff challenged them to compete at the highest level every day in practice and that led to an amazing season.

“To finish the final four weeks of the season ranked in the county is special. It really came down to the work ethic of the boys and the absolute 100% belief that they could compete with any team.”

Edison’s top-ranked girls’ volleyball team was eliminated Saturday in the Division 1-AA quarterfinals after visiting Mater Dei knocked off the host Chargers, 25-13, 26-24, 18-25, 25-17. Senior outside hitter Cassie Strickland led Sunset League co-champion Edison with 16 kills.
