Oilers seek CIF crown

The Huntington Beach High field hockey team, co-champion of the Sunset League Southern Division, opened postseason play Monday with a 5-1 victory against Sunset League Northern Division winner Chaminade under the lights on the Oilers’ home field at Sheue Stadium.

With the win, Huntington improved to 18-2 and advanced to Wednesday’s semifinal round, the result of which wasn’t available by press time. A win Wednesday would put the Oilers in today’s championship game, also at Huntington.

The Oilers never trailed, taking a 1-0 lead when midfielder Brooke Berns tapped the ball back to midfielder Ashlyn Pooler, who scored from the top of the circle. Two minutes later, midfielder Lindsey Walter got a quick start on the ball after a foul and cross passed into the circle. Forward Jessica Van Arsdale deflected the pass to forward Corinne Clegg, who netted the ball into the corner of the goal to make it 2-0.

Before the period was over, midfielder Kayla Wigney scored from top of the circle off a back-handed pass from Clegg, and Chaminade’s Amanda Mitchell scored what turned out to be the Eagles’ only goal off an assist by Shelby Paulseth.

In the second period, Van Arsdale carried the ball from the 50-yard line, maneuvered around several defenders, drew out the Eagles’ goalie then dodged her to score unassisted. Berns later shot a pass down the center of the circle to Wigney, who flicked the ball to Walter who scored the final goal.

Coach Cathy Van Doornum’s Oilers tied for the Sunset League Southern Division championship with Newport Harbor, but the Oilers secured the league’s top-seed in the playoffs based on fewer goals allowed than the Sailors. Huntington wrapped up the No. 1 seed after blanking Marina, 5-0, on Oct. 28.

Huntington, which has won or shared the last four league titles, outscored its league opponents, 38-1. Through Monday, they’ve outscored their season’s opponents, 70-3.

In the Oct. 28 win over Marina, Clegg scored on a rebound shot after Pooler’s shot on goal was turned away by Marina goalie Madison Mulcahey. The lead grew to 2-0 when forward Hannah Rodriguez scored off a pass from midfielder Abby Masters. Before the first period ended, Masters set up another score by Rodriguez, who dribbled through the circle for the score.

The Oilers scored their final two goals in the second period, the first coming on a shot by Clegg off a pass in the circle from Van Arsdale. The final point came off a Huntington short corner when Berns passed to Pooler for the score.

On Oct. 26, Huntington blanked host Westminster, 11-0. Van Arsdale scored three times, Clegg scored twice, Wigney and Maggie Prizler both scored once, defenders Gina Taglieri and Julianne Lucas both scored rare goals with Lucas posting two scores, and Nicole Anzivino scored her first goal of the year. The scores by Taglieri and Lucas were celebrated by their teammates.

Clegg and Van Arsdale each also had three assists, Walter had two assists and Wigney had one assist.

Girls’ Golf

Halle Young and Haley Wian of Marina, and Fountain Valley’s Sally Kim, are moving on to the CIF Southern Section Individual finals.

The trio earned a berth in Monday’s finals at La Purisima Golf Course in Lompoc by finishing among the top 45 at Monday’s CIF-SS Southern Individual Regional at El Dorado Golf Course in Long Beach. Kim scored 82, Young 83 and Wian 86, to advance (the cut was 86) from a field of 104 golfers in the division. A third Marina golfer, Casey Kang, just missed the cut with an 87.

A third Sunset League golfer, Esther Lee of Los Alamitos, also qualified for Monday’s section finals. Edison’s Jamie Harada (90) and Vanessa Honnes (99) finished tied for 57th and 85th, respectively.

The top 28 out of the 90 golfers from Monday’s Southern Section Individual Finals advance to the CIF-Women’s Southern California Golf Assn. Foundation Southern California Girls’ Golf Championships in Murrieta on Nov. 10.

Sunset League-champion Marina and Edison just missed advancing to the CIF-SS Ford Girls’ Golf Central Team Divisional team playoffs.

On Oct. 28 at Jurupa Hills Country Club, Marina finished in fifth place and Edison was sixth among 20 teams. The top four teams from the division advance to today’s CIF-SS team finals at Western Hills Country Club. The Vikings missed a top four spot by one stroke and the Chargers were a single stroke behind Marina in the standings.

Marina finished with 443 points in the team standings, while Edison had 144. Fountain Valley, the third entry from the Sunset League, tied for 17th with Centennial/Corona with 493 points. Cerritos won the team title with 381 points. Rounding out the top four and advancing to today’s CIF-SS team finals is Arcadia (399), Great Oak (439) and Long Beach Wilson (442).

“It has been an amazing season from many perspectives as the girls kept improving as the season moved along and made it fun to be a part of,” Marina Coach Jim Morris said. “I can’t wait to do it again next year.”
