Oilers defeat Chargers, 10-4

Huntington Beach used a strong second half surge Oct. 26 against Edison to score a 10-4 Sunset League boys’ water polo victory over at Newport Harbor High.

The Oilers improved to 3-1 in league and 21-5 overall after outscoring the Chargers, 7-1, in the second half.

“Our man advantage and man-down defense was stellar,” Huntington Coach Brian Anderson said. “Guys played calm, just like in practice. We knew we would earn kick outs because we are good in center and transition.

“It was nice to see them step up in those categories and always nice to beat your cross-town rival.”

Scott Schultz scored a game-high four goals for the Oilers. Jameson Shively scored twice and single goals were scored by Ian Arnold, Noah Harrison, John Lovat and Jovan Jeremic. Brandon Lucia had eight saves.

Edison Coach Diggy Riley praised his team’s defensive effort in the opening half, calling it “phenomenal,” as the teams went into the half tied at 3.

Tony Morelli led the Chargers in scoring with two goals. Brent Bazzell and Troy Oates both scored once and Nate Sfreddo had 11 saves.

In the first game of a league triple-header at the Newport Harbor pool, Fountain Valley scored a 14-8 win over Marina. The Barons’ Greg Pace netted five goals lead all scorers. Nick Frens scored three goals and had four steals, Shawn Carroll scored twice with three assists and four steals, Dalton Kenefick scored twice and Kyle Breznau and Alex Kryger each scored once. Chad Halsted finished with 13 saves, six assists and two steals.

Robby Melton’s three goals paced the Marina offense. Jason Choi scored twice and Tylor Megill, Kyle Ellis and Riley Kantor each scored once. Michael Wolf had seven saves.

The other Sunset League game Oct. 26 pitted Newport Harbor against Los Alamitos, with first place on the line. The host Sailors beat the Griffins, 7-3. Newport Harbor leads the league race at 4-0, while Los Al slipped to 3-1 and into a second-place tie with Huntington Beach.

The Sunset League wrapped up league play Wednesday, but the scores weren’t available at press time. Huntington took on Los Alamitos, with the winner moving into second place.
