Fast start keys victory for Green Chargers

The Huntington Beach Mighty Mite Division Green Chargers took the early lead Saturday on the La Mirada Blue Matadores and rode the quick start to a 26-12 victory at La Mirada High.

Joey Valenta scored on a 35-yard touchdown reception and Connor Provost scored on an extra point reception early in the first quarter to put the Green Chargers (5-3) on top. Provost, behind the blocking of Carson Chalabian, also scored on a 35-yard run and Jordan Ginnis ran in the extra point.

Huntington’s third touchdown came on a quarterback keeper in the third quarter by Ryan Easterday. The Green Chargers scored their final touchdown on a 30-yard pass from Easterday to Brayden Johnson.

Jackson Schnoor, Bryce Sizemore, Luke Mulford and Shawn Chisholm led the Huntington defense.

The Green Chargers host the South Coast Tritons at 10 a.m. Saturday at Edison High.

In another Mighty Mite Division game Saturday, tight end Ivan Soto scored on a 42-yard pass play with one second remaining to put the Huntington Beach Gold Chargers (2-5-1) into a 20-20 tie with the host Santa Margarita Gold Eagles

Santa Margarita had scored on a 25-yard pass play on fourth down to take a 20-14 lead with 12 seconds left.

The Gold Chargers travel to Lakewood on Saturday for a noon game against the Black Lancers.

Jr. Midget Division

Huntington Beach 28, Saddleback Valley 6: The Chargers finished regular-season play undefeated by running past the Black Wolverines on Saturday at Edison High.

Chase Ault scored on a 20-yard run to give Huntington an 8-0 lead. After the Black Wolverines pulled to within 8-6 — the extra point was blocked by Huntington’s Karson Ayres — Griffin O’Connor caught a 25-yard scoring pass from Ault and Daniel Serrano rushed for two scores that allowed the Chargers to pull away.

The blocking of Joe Flannery, Malik Bowden, Caden Snyder, Paul Rogers, Matt Martinez, Ricky Masters, Zane Webster, Kerrison Stoffal and Brandon Moradian opened up the offense for Huntington.

Huntington Beach 34, Whittier 0: The Oilers found a new weapon Saturday, going to the air for two scores on the way to a shutout victory over the Trojans at La Serna High in Whittier.

Gaining nearly all of their yards on the ground in the previous five games, the Oilers got touchdown passes of 24 and 62 yards from quarterback Nate Skorheim to receiver Zack Italasano.

The Oilers put this one away early. Aden Eckenwiler had an interception and a fumble recovery, both in the first quarter, to set up an eight-yard touchdown run by Trent Klasson and a 38-yard touchdown run by Jonah Del Rosario. The 24-yard scoring pas from Skorheim to Italasano gave the Oilers a 21-0 lead by the end of the first quarter.

Eckenwiler contributed on offense as well, scoring on a 16-yard run in the third quarter for a 27-0 lead. Skorheim’s 62-yard touchdown pass to Italasano in the fourth quarter capped the scoring.

The Oilers spread the wealth on offense. Blake Gilbert, who normally plays on the line, rushed for 12 yards on two carries, and Cade Haakenson, normally a receiver, gained seven yards on three carries. Tristan Britt and Sean Fallon also ran the ball for the Oilers (3-3) , who play on the road Saturday at Rowland Heights.

Huntington Beach 48, Rowland Heights 6: Steven Rocio and Will Preuss played key roles on offense and Jacob Rosow, AJ Gatto and Ryan Rector had interceptions for the Oilers in their rout of the Raiders.
