Rain can’t slow down Oilers in shutout victory

Huntington Beach overcame a downpour and the Fountain Valley Barons on Oct. 11 to post another shutout victory, this one a 5-0 decision that kept the Oilers undefeated in Sunset League girls’ field hockey play.

Kayla Wigney scored three goals and Nicola Taglieri and Samantha Earthman each scored once. Abby Masters and Kirsti Strangeland had assists as the Oilers improved to 6-0 in league.

Huntington traveled north last weekend to UC Davis for tournament action. The Oilers went 0-2, losing to Davis High (2-0) and in sudden death overtime to St. Francis of Mountain View (3-2). Brittney Cristini had six saves and the Oilers had 11 shots on goal in the loss to Davis. Allie Knobbe had a goal and an assist, Earthman scored and Wigney had an assist in the loss to St. Francis.

Boys’ Water Polo

Huntington Beach ran its Sunset League record to 2-0 on Oct. 10 by handing Fountain Valley its first league defeat, 11-5, at Newport Harbor High. Jovan Jeremic scored a game-high five goals, Matt Cook scored three goals and Alex Wolf had 11 saves for the Oilers, who led, 5-1, at the half.

Dalton Kenefick scored three goals and Chad Halsted had 11 saves for the Barons.

In nonleague play Monday, Huntington downed Montebello, 9-4. Jeremic again led the scoring with four goals. Montebello was the seventh ranked team in CIF Southern Section Division 3.

The Oilers play a pair of nonleague matches this weekend. They host Dana Hills at 4 p.m. Friday and play at Ventura at 4:15 p.m. Saturday.

In other Sunset League action at Newport Harbor on Oct. 10, Edison fell, 11-7, to Newport Harbor and Marina lost, 19-1, to Los Alamitos. Joseph Lastelic scored for Marina (0-2 league) in its 19-1 loss to third-ranked Los Alamitos (1-1 league).

Alec Niederland and Justin Harrison both scored three goals, Troy Oates and Dane Estrella sparked the defense and Nick Holloran had six saves for Edison, which outscored the Sailors (2-0 league), 5-4, in the second half.

Edison competed last weekend at the Newport Rib Company Tournament and finished second to University. The Chargers scored tourney wins against Colony (12-2), Palm Desert (13-9) and Fountain Valley (8-5). Their lone loss came to University (9-2).

The Chargers played a nonleague game Tuesday against Santa Margarita at Ocean View High. They fell behind, 4-0, but got their game going before eventually falling, 8-7. Niederland and Oates each scored three goals and Harrison scored once.

Girls’ Volleyball

In Sunset League action Tuesday, Edison rallied from a two-set deficit to stun host Newport Harbor (No. 6, Division 1-AA), 19-25, 23-25, 25-17, 25-19, 15-8. Junior setter Kendra Koelsch had 18 kills and 15 digs, senior middle blocker Angie Santopoalo had eight kills and senior Kelynn Mullally had 20 digs for Huntington, which improved to 4-2 in league.

Also on Tuesday, Huntington Beach swept Fountain Valley, 25-18, 25-18, 25-13, and Marina was swept by second-ranked Los Alamitos, 25-12, 25-10, 26-24.

In Sunset League matches played Oct. 10, host Huntington Beach survived Edison, 26-24, 22-25, 25-22, 15-11, and Fountain Valley swept visiting Marina, 25-14, 25-11, 25-22.

Laney Ehlers had 14 kills, Ari Jacobsen 25 digs and Shayna Johnson 27 assists for Fountain Valley (1-4), which picked up its first league win against Marina.
