Huntington Beach 45, Long Beach 0: Huntington ran its record to 5-0 by routing the Jackrabbits.

Aden Eckenwiler rushed for a first-quarter touchdown to put the Oilers on top for good to cap a drive that was kept alive by a 35-yard fourth-down run by Dominic Peseti and a 12-yard gain on a quarterback sneak by Nathan Skorheim. In the second quarter, Peseti ran in for a score and Skorheim recovered a Long Beach fumble with three minutes left in the opening half and later scored on a keeper up the middle. Lyrik Fata’s two-point kick brought the score to 26-0.

Jonah Del Rosario, who had a sack on the final play of the half, started the second half by recovering an onside kick for the Oilers. Following an eight-yard run by Blake Gilbert, Eckenwiler scored on a 27-yard run down the left side. Peseti scored on a sweep from six yards out late in the third quarter.

Jake Favazza, Cade Jackman, Daryeus Smolenski, Tristan Britt, Troy Fletcher and Garrett Dailey all had big stops on defense for the Oilers.

Huntington puts its perfect record on the line Saturday in Whittier when it meets the Trojans at 11 a.m.

Baldwin Hills 20, Huntington Beach 7: Huntington moved the ball successfully throughout the game but had problems in the red zone and fell to the Bruins.

Runs by Chandler Fincher, Ryan Rector, Zach Italasano and Garret Wildermuth gave the Huntington offense a solid start but it took a touchdown run late in the first half by Rector to pull Oilers to within 13-7 at the half. Huntington’s defense was stout in the second half and included two fumble recoveries by Nate Orourke and key plays from Trent Fletcher, Ethan Howard and Raymond Baker.

Jr. Midget Division

South Orange County 34, Huntington Beach 0: Huntington’s inexperience showed Saturday as mistakes and big plays doomed the locals in a loss to the Patriots. The Oilers were only penalized once and successfully converted in third- and fourth-down situations, but couldn’t reach the end zone.

“It seemed like every time we got the ball through the defensive line of the Patriots, we gave it up,” Huntington Coach Kevin Romberg said. “They weren’t giving us yards, we had to work for everything we got. We had some tough running in between the tackles behind the blocking of Chris Napoli and Carson Renne, but it wasn’t enough.

“Defensively we just couldn’t stop the Patriots’ running attack. We knew they were a good team coming into this game. We had a plan, we knew what we needed to do, (but) it just didn’t pan out like we had hoped. We will take what we learned from this loss and improve.”

The Oilers take on the Mission Viejo Cowboys at 3 p.m. Saturday at Huntington Beach High.

Woodcrest 14, Huntington Beach 6: The Oilers played their best game of the season Saturday but came up short against the Woodcrest Generals. Following a scoreless first half, the Generals took a 7-0 lead but Huntington used a long touchdown run by Ross Rector to pull to within 7-6. The Oilers had a chance to tie the score late in the fourth quarter but couldn’t cross the goal line.

Standout performances for Huntington came from Shawn Phillips, Nate Bowley, Tyler Rea and Dylan Jacques, who also played quarterback and finished with six sacks.

Huntington takes on Mission Viejo at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.

La Habra 24, Huntington Beach 8: The Huntington Beach Green Chargers moved the ball on offense but had trouble punching it in and it cost them in a loss to the La Habra Silver Lions on Saturday at Edison High.

Christopher Soto ran the ball nine times for 44 yards and a touchdown and also completed three of four pass attempts for 54 yards, with all three completions going to Cole Koffler. The Chargers also got contributions from Nick Morrell, who rushed for 36 first-half yards on eight carries and Ryan Karns ran 11 times for 34 yards. But as much as the Chargers were able to move the ball, they were their own worst enemy: they were flagged for eight penalties for 48 yards.

“We have to control the penalties, that’s what killed us,” Chargers coach Dareld Karns said. “We had at least 12 minutes controlling the ball in the first half and did a good job, we just had a problem finishing.”

Defense ruled in the first quarter as neither team was able to sustain a drive. In the second quarter, the Chargers’ Mateo Lopez made a touchdown-saving tackle on a pass play, but on the next play, the Lions scored on a 24-yard run. A successful two-point kick gave La Habra an 8-0 lead.

Huntington set up its ensuing series at its own 41-yard line with 1:06 left until halftime. On the first play of the drive, Soto threw a screen pass to Koffler, who raced toward the end zone before being caught and tacked at the seven after a 52-yard gain. The Chargers then had three straight running plays that took them to the one, where they faced fourth and goal with 2.2 seconds left. A false start by the Huntington offensive line moved the ball back to the six, and a running play on the final play of the half came up short of the goal line.

La Habra scored on a 50-yard pass play and an eight-yard run in the third quarter to go up 24-0. Soto’s four-yard TD run late in the fourth quarter allowed the Chargers to get on the scoreboard and avoid the shutout.

The Chargers travel to Hacienda Heights on Saturday for an 8 a.m. game against the Hacienda La Puente Phantoms.
