Green Chargers move into first with win

The Huntington Beach Green Chargers took over sole possession of first place in the Jr. Midget Division standings Saturday by knocking off the previously undefeated St. Margarita Blue Titans, 18-0, in Pop Warner Football play at San Juan Hills High in San Juan Capistrano.

Daniel Serrano scored two touchdowns and Chase Ault had the third score for Huntington. The Green Chargers defense stifled the Blue Titans throughout the game. David Atencio returned an interception 60 yards and Miguel Moreida was the top tackler on the day.

Huntington 12, Santa Margarita 6: The Green Chargers claimed the top spot in their division by handing the Blue Titans their first loss in a showdown for first place.

Tanner Nelson, Cameron Eden, Cameron Mase, Jack Horton and Jake Furlong combined to rush for nearly 300 yards. Trent Fletcher, Mateo Lopez, Nate Scott and the Green Chargers defense held the Blue Titans without an offensive touchdown.

Huntington (5-1) plays a 3 p.m. game Saturday at Yorba Linda.

Mighty Mite Division

Canyon Hills 14, Gold Chargers 6: Huntington dropped a close game to the host Red Hawks at Peralta Canyon Park in Anaheim.

The Gold Chargers (2-4) host the Tustin Gold Cobras at 8 a.m. Saturday at Edison High.

Santa Ana 26, Green Chargers 0: Huntington suffered its first shutout loss of the season in falling to the Monarchs at Memorial Park in Santa Ana.

Keilan Lefaoseu, Owen Jewell and Jeremy Alcorn had key tackles, Jerian Operana had a sack and Jace Umbarger recovered a fumble in the third quarter for the Green Chargers (4-2), who host the Lakewood Red Lancers at 10 a.m. Saturday at Edison High.

Jr. All-American Football

The Huntington Beach Clinic Division Oilers showcased their backfield depth with a devastating ground game in a 26-13 victory over the Corona Panthers on Saturday at Corona High.

The Oilers (2-2) had six different ballcarriers combine for 309 yards and four touchdowns, led by Zack Pratte who ran five times for 92 yards, including a 72-yard touchdown run, and Aden Eckenwiler, who had 91 yards on 16 carries, including a 19-yard touchdown run.

Daryeus Smolenski had one carry for 55 yards, Trent Klasson rushed nine times for 47 yards and scored on a four-yard run, Nate Skorheim had four carries for 13 yards, and Jonah Del Rosario had 11 yards and a touchdown on three carries.

Defensively, Blake Gilbert recovered a fumble to set up an Oilers’ score in the second quarter. Del Rosario had a key sack on a fourth-and-three play with Corona at the Huntington six-yard line in the fourth quarter.

Huntington Beach 20, Washington 18: Huntington earned its first win of the season by holding off the Generals on Saturday.

Caleb Dochnal and Andrew Delgado had key stops on defense for the Oilers (1-3), who host the Orange Chiefs at 1 p.m. Saturday at Huntington Beach High.
