H.B. continues to impress

Brian Anderson didn’t call it his team’s best effort.

Still, his Huntington Beach Oilers had more than enough to take care of Servite on Tuesday in boys’ water polo action.

The Oilers were without the services of two players — including primary hole-set Ian Arnold (illness) — for the key nonleague matchup with the visiting Friars, but their depth and balance paid huge dividends in a 14-9 victory. Huntington led, 4-0, after one quarter and was in front, 10-3, by the half, in improving to 11-2.

“In all honesty, I didn’t think we played well today,” Anderson said of his team, which two days earlier claimed third place at the tough South Coast Tournament. “Giving up nine goals, we did not expect. Our offense has been on fire lately, but we gave up too many goals today.”

Senior Noah Harrison led Huntington’s first-half blitz with four goals and finished with five. Senior John Lovat spread his scoring evenly in each half and finished with four goals.

Jovan Jeremic scored twice and Max Schultz, Jameson Shively and Griffin Camps each scored once. Goalie Brandon Lucia had 10 saves and five steals.

Jason Varela led Servite with a game-high six goals and Patrick Harding scored twice. Both Harding and Steven Marcin, who had a steal Tuesday, are Huntington Beach residents and played for Huntington Beach Water Polo Club.

“Griffin (Camps) also was sick but really stepped it up for us,” Anderson said. “So did John (Lovat), who played real well. He’s really becoming a consistent force for us. Brandon (Lucia) also did a real nice job with his stops and help on defense.”

Huntington begins play Thursday at the Villa Park Tournament. The Oilers are the No. 2-seed and take on Lakeside at the Esperanza High pool.

Edison won its final three games a the South Coast Tournament and placed 25th. The Chargers (6-3) lost tight games to The Bishop’s School of La Jolla (9-7) and Dana Hills (8-5) but came back to easily defeat Redlands (17-5), Mission Viejo (13-3) and Granite Hills (9-6).

“Our centers, Justin Harrison and Troy Oates, both sophomores, had great weekends while our center defenders, Kyle Spreeman and freshman Dane Estrella, were equally as effective on the defensive end,” Edison Coach Diggy Riley said. “We really feel that our defense was the key to a great weekend and it started with our goaltending. Nate Sfreddo played at a very high level and has been very consistent in the cage this season.”

Girls’ Volleyball

Los Alamitos successfully defended its title Monday by winning the Dave Mohs Orange County Championships at Edison. The Griffins, ranked No. 1 in CIF Division 1-AA, won the Division 1 crown for the third straight year by defeating host Edison, 25-17, 25-23. The Chargers are ranked third in Division 1-AA.

Francis Parker of San Diego defeated Canyon/Anaheim, 23-25, 25-15, 15-13, to win the Division 2 title.
