Barons seek momentum

Fountain Valley wants a win to head into a bye week possessing momentum. Trabuco Hills also is out to cap what would be a successful nonleague schedule with a victory.

On Friday, one team will reach its goal when they meet at 7 p.m. at Huntington Beach High’s Cap Sheue Field. It’s the final nonleague test for both squads. Trabuco Hills starts South Coast League play next week and Fountain Valley opens its Sunset League slate Oct. 14.

“It’s a big game for both teams,” Fountain Valley Coach John Shipp said. “We both want to end nonleague play on a winning note and this is a good game against a very good team and it’s a good test to get us ready for Sunset League play.”

Fountain Valley ran its win streak to two games and improved to 3-1 by winning, 34-30, last week at Downey. The Barons took a 14-3 first-quarter lead but the teams were tied at the half (17-17) and after three quarters (24-24). A six-yard touchdown run by junior quarterback Chris d’Entremont and a 42-yard field goal by Derek Huynen in the fourth quarter gave the Barons the lead for good.

d’Entremont hit Jacob Church with a 12-yard scoring pass and Mason Clevenger scored on a 20-yard run in the first quarter. Huynen hit a 24-yard field just before the end of the first half and Sean Myers ignited the Barons with a 95-yard return of the second-half kickoff for a go-ahead score.

d’Entremont has stepped in to lead the Barons at quarterback the last two games. The junior has replaced Kai Fernandez, who suffered a broken collarbone during a second-half play in the San Clemente game Sept. 8.

Shipp praised the play of Myers and d’Entremont.

“He’s a starer at wide receiver, defensive back and on special teams and he had a tremendous game,” Shipp said of Myers, a senior and returning all-league player. “He had over 200 return yardage and also returned another kickoff to the (Downey) 10.

“Chris is doing real well. He threw two interceptions last week but he stood in the pocket when they (Downey) brought the pressure. He was poised for a young man who really has had no varsity experience. That impressed me. This was a good win for us. We have quite a few kids out with injuries, but several other kids stepped it up and did a great job. I thought our defense really stepped it up in the second half and our special teams play was terrific.”

Trabuco Hills also returned to its winning ways last week by defeating JSerra, 31-14, to improve to 3-1. Mitchell Simonsen rushed for 198 yards and two touchdowns on 31 carries and Spencer Herson scored on a 75-yard fumble return for the Mustangs. Simonsen leads Trabuco in rushing and is averaging nearly six yards per carry.

The Mustangs also have wins over Capistrano Valley (28-21) and Newport Harbor (35-14). Their only loss was a 35-14 setback two weeks ago to undefeated Santa Margarita, which was ranked fifth in the Pac-5 Division.

The Barons will have the chance to go on the mend next week when they are idle. Among the injured is all-league wide receiver/defensive back Wyatt Christensen (hip pointer), who Shipp said is a “vital part for us” on both sides of the ball. Fountain Valley starts Sunset League play Oct. 14 at Newport Harbor.

Thursday’s game

Ocean View (1-3) vs. Saddleback (0-3), 7 p.m., Segerstrom High: Ocean View completes nonleague play against a Saddleback team that has struggled.

The Seahawks also have found the going tough the past two weeks. Most recently, they dropped a seesaw, 34-31, battle to Costa Mesa in which they converted one extra-point and missed two field goal attempts. The final attempt bounced off the crossbar with 2:20 left in the game.

Ocean View tallied 413 rushing yards and 543 yards of total offense, but still came up short. Quarterback Timmy Robinson threw for 130 yards and rushed for 112. Running back Travis Sparks-Jackson was dynamite, rushing for 301 yards and getting 75 yards on his only reception of the game.

Saddleback has scored just one touchdown in three games. Last week, the Roadrunners were shut out, 47-0, by Santa Ana Valley. The defense has given up an average of 40 points per game. Ocean View has scored an average of 43 points in its last three games, but is just 1-2 in that span.

Friday’s games

Edison (3-1) vs. Mater Dei (0-3), 7:30 p.m., Santa Ana Bowl: Edison will try to bounce back from last week’s loss to top-ranked Servite against a Mater Dei team that has yet to reach the win column. That’s rare air indeed for the Monarchs, who are 0-3 for the first time under Coach Bruce Rollinson.

But don’t be deceived by the Monarchs’ record. Edison Coach Dave White knows better.

“That doesn’t mean anything,” he said of Mater Dei’s start. “They lost three tough games to ranked teams that they easily could have won. They are tough, well-coached and plan on them playing their best game of the year Friday. They sure are hungry. So are we, after last week’s loss to Servite.”

Mater Dei began the season ranked 10th in the Pac-5 Division, but has dropped from the rankings following close losses to three highly-regarded teams: L.A. Carson (No. 2, CIF-LA Division I), 26-22; Centennial/Corona (No. 1, CIF-SS Inland Division), 28-20, and last week, in overtime to San Clemente (No. 4, CIF-SS Pac-5 Division), 28-21.

Edison was handed its first loss of the season last week by Servite, which scored 27 straight points to wipe out a 7-0 deficit to post a 27-14 victory. The Chargers reached Friars territory on seven of their 11 possessions, including their first four drives of the game. They scored touchdowns on a nice pump-fake by quarterback Chase Favreau, who hit a wide-open Troy Baljeu from 25-yards out, and on a six-yard run up the gut by Elijah Herrera.

Linebacker and co-captain Bryce Campbell recovered a fumble by Friars’ receiver Sam Hunt after a reception in the first quarter that set up Edison’s first scoring drive.

The Chargers still have several starters out of action. Running backs/defensive backs Nick Masaniai and Marquis Ross, and running back/defensive end Derek Baljeu won’t play Friday, but White says the trio will be ready for league play. White said that all-league kicker/receiver/defensive back Gavin Perdomo had recent ACL surgery and is lost for the season.

This is Edison’s final tune-up before Sunset League play. The Chargers are idle next week and open league play against Los Alamitos at 7 p.m. Oct. 13 in their homecoming game at Huntington Beach High.

Huntington Beach (3-1) vs. Westminster (1-2), 7 p.m., Westminster High: Huntington Beach goes after its fourth win in nonleague play when it visits Westminster.

The Oilers scored an impressive 36-6 road win last week over an Aliso Niguel team that was 3-0 and ranked 10th in the Southwest Division. Quarterback Michael Chislock threw for 388 yards and five touchdowns to lead the rout of the Wolverines. Three of his touchdown passes went to Chris Ogilvie (121 receiving yards) and one each to Ramon Vargas (121 receiving yards) and Austin Simpkins (145 receiving yards).

Ogilvie, Darren Romo and John Bridges had interceptions and Sebastian Demartini a fumble recovery for an Oilers defense that wasn’t scored upon until the fourth quarter.

Westminster picked up its first win of the season last week by cruising past Anaheim, 28-7. Quarterback Dominic Pendergrass rushed for a touchdown and threw for 142 yards for the Lions, who also lost, 21-14, two weeks ago to Marina.

Marina (1-2-1) vs. Aliso Niguel (3-1), 7 p.m., Aliso Niguel High: Aliso Niguel hosts its second consecutive Sunset League team when it entertains Marina.

The Wolverines started the season with wins over Woodbridge, Long Beach Millikan and University, but last week was dominated, 36-6, by Huntington Beach.

Marina rallied in the fourth quarter last week against visiting Warren to earn a 21-21 tie in its homecoming game. Alex Waked rushed for 125 yards and a touchdown and threw for 142 yards, with two touchdown passes going to receiver Brayde Hill. Defensive back Scott Reed had an interception and Eli Cabaccang a fumble recovery for the Vikings.

Marina scored on three of its four second-half possessions.

“I am really sorry that it ended in a tie,” Marina Coach George Pascoe said. “We had the momentum and would have loved to play overtime. We need to play all four quarters against a very fine Aliso team. If we show up and play our game, the score will take care of itself.”

St. Anthony (2-1) vs. Brethren Christian (2-2), 7 p.m., Ocean View High: Brethren Christian is coming off a 60-39 loss to Saddleback Valley Christian and heads to Long Beach to take on St. Anthony in nonleague play.

The Warriors, despite having several players out of action last week, rolled up 463 yards of offense in the loss. Quarterback Sam Franklin was 15 of 27 for 205 yards and threw two touchdown passes to freshman Guy Demazeliere and one to Anthony Moore. Franklin also scored on a 62-yard pass from Jack McInally and rushed for 71 yards. Running back Brandon White had 120 yards and a score on just 11 carries.

St. Anthony is coming off a bye week. The Saints have won two straight by a combined score of 96-12 over Animo Leadership of Inglewood and Fairmont Prep of Anaheim. They are predominantly a run team (853 yards in three games), led by junior back Javen Lopez, who has more than half of that total (482 yards) and is averaging 11.76 yards per carry.
