Dave Mohs tourney returns

The Dave Mohs Orange County Championships girls’ volleyball tournament is again stockpiled with talented teams. This year’s event starts at 3:30 p.m. Friday. The tournament, hosted by Edison High, continues at 8 a.m. Saturday and concludes with championship match play on Monday. The field includes local teams Edison, Huntington Beach and Marina, and Los Alamitos is back to defend its Division 1 title.

The 64-team field is split into two divisions (1 and 2) with each division made up of eight, four-team pools. Seven local gymnasiums — Edison, Huntington Beach, Marina, Fountain Valley, Costa Mesa Corona del Mar and Newport Harbor, will host pool-play action. Edison, Huntington and Marina each will compete in Division 1. The Chargers are in Pool 3, along with Long Beach Poly, Bakersfield and University and will play at the Edison gym. The Oilers are in Pool 8 with Yucaipa, Dana Hills and Carson and will play at the Huntington gym. Marina is in Pool 4 with Mater Dei, San Clemente and Beckman and will play at the Marina gym.

On Friday, Edison will play Bakersfield and University. The Chargers will face Long Beach Poly on Saturday. Huntington starts pool play Friday with matches against Dana Hills and Carson and on Saturday takes on Yucaipa. Marina’s two opponents Friday are Mater Dei and San Clemente and the Vikings play Beckman on Saturday.

Boys’ Water Polo

Huntington Beach came into the week sporting a 5-1 record and was fresh off a fifth-place finish last weekend at the inaugural Santa Barbara Tournament. The Oilers defeated St. Francis of Mountain View, 13-6, in the fifth-place game. Other wins were over Dos Pueblos (13-3) and Vista of San Diego (11-9). Their loss was a 6-4 setback to Miramonte of Orinda.

The Oilers, ranked fourth in CIF Southern Section Division 1, received strong play from Ian Arnold, Jovan Jeremic, Noah Harrison and Jameson Shively, Huntington Coach Brian Anderson said.

The Oilers spent 11 days in Croatia in July. The team raised funds for the trip and trained at the Jadran Hotel and played matches against other teams from around the world.

“The kids gained so much from the experience in terms of physicality and mental toughness,” said Anderson. “One of the best team bonding experiences, as well.”

Huntington is competing Thursday through Saturday at the South Coast-Newport Harbor Tournament. The Oilers are the No. 5-seed in the 32-team event. They’ll host Servite in a nonleague game at 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Huntington pool.

Edison went 2-1 last week, falling to Dana Hills, 12-10, before bouncing back to down Woodbridge, 11-7, and Beckman, 11-1.

The Chargers were tied at 10 with less than three minutes to play against a Dana Hills team that was ranked 10th in CIF Division 1. Senior Tony Morelli and sophomore Troy Oates both scored three goals to lead the Chargers and senior Kyle Spreeman had two goals. Sophomores Alec Niederland and Justin Harrison each scored once and senior Nate Sfreddo had eight saves.

“The boys really played at the level that they are capable of,” Edison Coach Diggy Riley said. “We still had too many turnovers, however, many that led to goals against us, but this is early in the season and it is just important that the boys recognize their mistakes and strive to improve in this area.”

Against Woodbridge, Morelli and Harrison both posted four goals and Oates, Spreeman and senior Brent Bazzell all scored once as the Chargers overcame a 7-4 halftime deficit and shut out the Warriors in the second half. Sfreddo finished with five saves.

Morelli had five goals, Oates scored four times, Spreeman and freshman Dane Estrella each had a goal and Sfreddo had 14 saves in Tuesday’s win over Beckman.

Edison opens play in the South Coast-Newport Harbor Tournament at 6 p.m. Thursday against The Bishop’s School of La Jolla at Newport Harbor High.

CIF Rankings

This week’s CIF Southern Section polls were released Monday. In girls’ volleyball, Edison is ranked No. 4 and Huntington Beach No. 10 in the Division 1-AA poll, and Ocean View is No. 5 in Division 4-AA.

In girls’ cross-country, Marina is ranked seventh in Division 1 and in boys’ water polo, Huntington Beach is ranked fourth in Division 1 and Ocean View is No. 4 in Division 7.
