Chargers, Friars renew rivalry

Share

It’s the fourth week of the season for the Edison High football team, and with it comes what has become a must-see game on the Chargers’ schedule.

For the seventh straight year, Edison is playing Servite in game No. 4. This year’s nonleague matchup pits the two-time CIF Southern Section Pac-5 Division champion Friars against the Chargers. Both teams head into Friday’s 7 p.m. showdown at what is certain to be a standing-room-only crowd at Huntington Beach High’s Cap Sheue Field with 3-0 records.

The programs aren’t strangers to each other, either. Servite and Edison have played one another 13 times during the past 11 seasons, two of those games coming in postseason play, including the 2009 CIF Pac-5 championship game. The Chargers hold a slim 7-6 edge in those games.

“This is a big one for us,” Edison Coach Dave White said. “Servite once again has a great team. They have lots of veterans back from last year’s CIF championship team and (head coach) Troy Thomas is a great defensive coach. This is a great challenge for us.”

Edison is coming off a 34-13 win at Dana Hills. The Chargers fell behind, 7-0, after the Dolphins scored on an interception return, but then reeled off the next 34 points to pull away. Junior running back Marquis Ross started the scoring for Edison with an eight-yard touchdown run. Senior wide receiver Troy Baljeu scored on a nine-yard pass from senior quarterback Chase Favreau, junior back Elijah Herrera had a 40-yard touchdown run and senior receiver Sedric Hill scored on a 40-yard pass from Favreau and capped Edison’s scoring with a 73-yard punt return in the fourth quarter.

Favreau has thrown for 461 yards and six touchdowns in three games.

“I don’t think we came out ready to play against Dana Hills, although we did a nice job of coming back and taking control,” White said. “We were sloppy at times and we can’t do that against Servite. We need to tackle a bit better and cut down turnovers if we want to win Friday.”

The Chargers head into Friday’s big game a bit banged up. They lost senior all-league kicker and wide receiver Gavin Perdomo to a torn ACL in their first game against Baldwin (Hawaii) on Aug. 26. White said that Perdomo was scheduled to have surgery Wednesday. Two weeks later, senior all-league linebacker and running back Nick Masaniai went down to an MCL injury in a game against Garfield of Los Angeles.

White said he hopes to have Masaniai back for Sunset League play. Marquis Ross was injured in last week’s Dana Hills game and junior starting defensive end Derek Baljeu has had a “calf problem” and has played, “sparingly,” White said.

“We’re missing some key guys and we need some other players to step up for us,” White said.

Servite has faced a formidable nonleague slate to begin the season. The Friars opened their campaign against CIF San Diego Section Division II champion Oceanside and shut out the Pirates, 20-0. Next they knocked of Bishop Amat, 49-14. Last week, they held off defending CIF Southwest Division champ La Habra, 24-16, at Cerritos College. After facing Edison, they travel to Las Vegas to face 2010 Nevada state champion Bishop Gorman.

In the win over La Habra, senior quarterback Cody Pittman threw for 236 yards and tossed two touchdown passes in the first half. Kyle Ray scored on a 48-yard return off an on sides kick late in the fourth quarter

Next week, Edison wraps up the nonleague portion of its schedule with another showdown against another Trinity League team, Mater Dei. The Chargers are playing the Monarchs in Week No. 5 for the eighth consecutive year.

“These games against Servite and Mater Dei will not only show us what our strengths and weaknesses are, or where we stand, but also get us ready for the Sunset League race, “ White said. “We’re excited to see how we do.”

Warren (0-3) vs. Marina (1-2), 7 p.m., Westminster High: It’s homecoming for Marina in the first month of the season.

Last week the Vikings registered their first win of the year, a 21-14 victory over rival Westminster. Alex Waked, who normally starts at running back, got his first call at quarterback and guided the win. The senior scored the game’s first touchdown on a five-yard run and the game’s final touchdown on an 18-yard run up the middle in the fourth quarter. Sophomore linebacker James Myers scored on a 33-yard interception return in the first quarter to put Marina in front, 14-0.

Senior linebacker Nate Asoau and junior lineman Izak Faoa played big games defensively, as did sophomore defensive back Clay Fisher, who came up with an interception with 1:10 to play to stop Westminster one final time.

“It feels good to get that first one,” Pascoe said of the win. “I thought Alex (Waked) did an outstanding job and I thought our defense played great throughout the entire game.”

Warren is still looking for its first win. The Bears have lost to Burbank (10-3), Santa Fe (42-26) and last week fell, 14-11, to Long Beach Jordan.

The Mustangs scored five times in the second half, highlighted by an 80-yard fourth-quarter kickoff return by Mario Smith, who also led Costa Mesa in rushing with 184 yards and a touchdown.
