Gonzalez sets another milestone

Atlanta Falcons standout Tony Gonzalez, a 1993 graduate of Huntington Beach High, became the first NFL tight end to record 1,000 receptions in a career. Gonzalez achieved the milestone in Sunday’s 15-9 overtime loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers when he hauled in a 20-yard pass with 11:26 remaining in the third quarter.

He finished with two catches for 35 yards and now has 1,001 receptions for 11,842 yards and 82 touchdowns in his storied career.

The Falcons will celebrate Gonzalez’s achievement by declaring Tony Gonzalez Day during Sunday’s game against the Arizona Cardinals at the Georgia Dome.

Three baseball clinics offered this month

Craig Daedelow and Total Baseball, which has moved to a new indoor facility in Huntington Beach, has teamed up with Unlimited Performance Baseball to offer three clinics this month.

An infield clinic for youth ages 9 to 14 is from 5 to 7 p.m. Sept. 25 and limited to 10 players. The cost is $50 per athlete. For information on the infield clinic, contact Unlimited Performance Baseball founder Ryan Dambach at ryan@unlimitedperformancebaseball.com.

The Power Pitching Clinic (youth ages 9 to 14) is Sept. 26. Two sessions, 9 to 11 a.m. and noon to 2 p.m., are offered with a limit of 10 players per session. The cost is $50 per player. Interested athletes should contact Tom Oldham, the new director of pitching instruction, at tom.oldham@me.com.

The third clinic, a catching clinic, is from 6 to 8 p.m. Sept. 27 and is open to youth ages 9 to 14 and also limited to 10 players. The cost for the catching clinic is $50 per player. Club water polo registration open

Fall registration is open for Huntington Beach Water Polo Club. The club is available to beginning- to- advanced players and divisions are as follows: 10-and-Under Coed; 12U Girls, 12U Boys, 14U Girls, 14U Boys, 16U Girls, 16U Boys, 18U Girls and 18U Boys.

Lil’ Sluggers instruction dates set

Lifeletics Baseball Instruction in Huntington Beach announced that it is offering a Lil’ Sluggers Beginning Baseball Workout for local youth ages 4 to 7. The five-week training program, which will be held Mondays beginning Oct. 4 through Nov. 1, is designed as introductory instruction to build fundamentals. The cost is $99 per player for five workouts.
