One of the top girls’ volleyball events, the annual Dave Mohs Tournament hosted by Edison High, begins Friday at various local high school gymnasiums.

The tournament continues Saturday and concludes with championship-round play Monday at Edison.

Sixty-four squads, with teams playing in either Division 1 or Division 2, are entered in the 31st annual event. Sites include Edison’s Dave Mohs Gym and the gymnasiums at Huntington Beach, Marina, Fountain Valley, Newport Harbor and Corona del Mar, as well as possibly Estancia and Costa Mesa, Edison Coach Trent Jackson said.

The top teams in each pool from each division advance to compete in the championship bracket for the overall tournament title. The third-place teams from all pools will compete in the Silver division, and fourth-place teams will play in the Bronze division. Teams must win two out of three in both pool play and the playoffs, but the tournament becomes a single-elimination event following pool play.

Los Alamitos won the tournament title last year, defeating Corona del Mar in three games in the final. The Griffins are back to defend their title. Corona del Mar also returns and is a host site.

Pool play begins at 3 p.m. Friday. Second-day action starts at 8 a.m. Saturday. The championship match will be played Monday at Edison.

Division 1 teams: Bakersfield, Capo Valley, Carlsbad, Corona del Mar, Centennial/Bakersfield, Chaparral, Dana Hills, Edison, El Dorado, Garces Memorial, Huntington Beach, Laguna Beach, Liberty (Bakersfield), Long Beach Poly, Los Alamitos, Los Osos, Marina, Mater Dei, Mission Viejo, Murrieta Valley, Newport Harbor, Orange Lutheran, Palos Verdes, Peninsula, Rosary, Royal, San Clemente, Santa Margarita, Temecula Valley, Upland, Vista Murrieta, Yucaipa.

Dave Mohs was the first men’s basketball coach at Edison, then went on to take over the school’s girls’ volleyball program and developed it into one of the prominent programs in the Southern Section. The tournament originally was known as the Orange County Championships, but following his untimely death due to cancer, the tournament and the Edison gymnasium were named in Mohs’ honor, Jackson said.

Girls’ Volleyball

As openers go, the Sept. 9 nonleague match between Edison and host Mira Costa pitted two teams ranked third (Mira Costa) and fourth in the CIF Division 1-AA preseason poll. In the end, the match belonged to Edison, which returned home to Huntington Beach with a 25-23, 25-20, 25-23 sweep.

“This is good for our confidence,” Edison Coach Trent Jackson said. “It’s a long season, but this is a great start. We hope to be right there at the end of the season, too.”

Jackson said Edison was led by senior middle blockers Megan Reza and Morgan Pautsch, senior outside hitter Delaney McCraney and senior opposite Avaé Masaniai.

“I thought we sided out really well and served tough tonight,” Jackson said.

Having disposed of Mira Costa, Edison faced another biggie and turned its attention Saturday to Orange Lutheran, a team ranked No. 5 preseason in the Division I-AA poll. The Chargers showed no letdown, only their moxie, by rallying from two sets down to defeat the visiting Lancers, 23-25, 22-25, 25-23, 29-27, 15-13.

The wins over Mira Costa and Orange Lutheran vaulted Edison to the top of the first CIF Division 1-AA poll of the regular season. Following Edison in order in the poll is Orange Lutheran, Long Beach Poly, Los Alamitos, Thousand Oaks, Mater Dei, Mira Costa, Newport Harbor, Lakewood and Harvard-Westlake.
