Golden West cruises to easy victory

Raymond Huizar threw for three touchdowns and the Golden West College football team began its season Saturday with an impressive 34-7 victory over Glendale Community College at Orange Coast College. Huizar was 18 of 24 for 216 yards. He threw two scoring passes to Jared Cohen (36, 10 yards) and one to Austin Dotson (30 yards). Cody Johnson scored the game’s first touchdown on a 26-yard run in the first quarter and CJ White, who led the Rustlers in rushing with 83 yards on 12 carries, scored on a one-yard run in the second quarter. Golden West led, 20-0, at the half and 34-0 after three quarters.

The Rustlers host El Camino at 6 p.m. Saturday at OCC.

Green Chargers bounce back

The Huntington Beach Pee Wee Green Chargers bounced back from an season-opening defeat to earn their first win in the 2011 Pop Warner Football campaign, a 22-0 shutout against the host San Clemente Black Tritons.

Sherman Thomas started the scoring with a 65-yard punt return early in the second quarter. Quarterback Griffin O’Connor threw two touchdown passes to Shaun Colamonico to complete the scoring. O’Connor also completed key passes to Thomas, Chase Ault and Nolan Funke. The Chargers’ running game was led by Karson Ayres, Aaron Jones and Cameron Gonzales.

Defensively, the Chargers shut down the Tritons’ run game and recorded a safety. Jonathan Morieda, Dylan Alcantara and Adrian Perez plugged up the middle and the outside was contained by ends Zachary Edsell and Dacorian Turner.

Locals slated to play at Cowboys Stadium

Chase Ault and Luke Hoggard of Huntington Beach Pop Warner Football have been named play in the annual Offense-Defense Youth All-American Bowl at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, in December.

Ault, a running back, and Hoggard, a defensive lineman, are among several 11-12 year-old players who will participate in a week-long series of events that leads up to the seventh annual Offense-Defense All-American Bowl, an All-Star football game for high school seniors.

Water polo registration now open

Huntington Beach Water Polo Club is taking registration for its Fall 2011 Water Polo Club Session. Sign ups are open to beginners and advanced players in the following divisions: 10-and-under coed team, 12U, 14U, 16U and 18U boys’ teams, and 12U, 14U, 16U and 18U girls’ teams. Teams will compete in scrimmages and against other club teams during the season. The 18U girls’ team won the Junior Olympics national championship last month. Lacrosse clinics, league play starting

HB Blackhawks Lacrosse is offering fall clinics for five weeks starting Sunday. Ensuing clinics will run on four consecutive Sundays through Oct. 16. The clinics are open to girls grades three through eighth and boys grades first though eighth and will be held from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at Mesa View Middle School, 17601 Avilla Lane, Huntington Beach.

Clinics will focus on new or beginning players, but all experience levels are welcome. No registration required but the club is accepting a $10 donation.

Blackhawks Lacrosse also has registration open for its boys’ 5/6 and 7/8 fall 7 vs. 7 league for experienced players. League play starts Oct. 8 and runs seven consecutive weeks. Games will be played at San Joaquin Middle School in Irvine. The cost is $185 per player.

Girls’ volleyball fundraiser at Edison

The Edison High School girls’ volleyball program is sponsoring the Kill Hunger food drive in conjunction with its annual Dave Mohs Tournament, which is set for Sept. 24-26. The program is seeking donations from fans attending the three-day event that annually draws more than 100 teams. Donations are also being sought from local businesses.

All donations will benefit a local Orange County Food Bank and are tax deductible. Among the top items needed are canned food, canned fruit, canned meat, canned vegetables, dry foods, personal care items, peanut butter, snacks and drinks.

Marina baseball golf tourney set for Oct. 30

The Marina High baseball program is running the Marina Baseball Golf Tournament on Oct. 30 at Meadowlark Golf Course, 16782 Graham St., Huntington Beach. The big event includes golfing, a raffle and live and silent auctions.

Registration starts at 10:30 a.m. followed by an 11:30 a.m. shotgun start. Dinner festivities begin at 5 p.m. The cost is $125 per player (entry fee) and $40 for the dinner/auction and raffle only. Sponsorships ($500, $1,000) also are available.
