Marina seeks to dish out punishment

The battle is just two days away. Two schools, separated by only 2.5 miles, will meet again.

There’s quite a history on the gridiron between Marina and Westminster, and on Friday the neighborhood rivalry heats up again with the 48th meeting between the Vikings and Lions at Bill Boswell Field.

The teams, who have played each other since 1963, also share the same field when hosting games on the Westminster campus. This year, the Lions are the designated home team for the game, which is known in these circles as the Black & Blue Game.

“The kids all know each other and have grown up in each other’s backyard,” second-year Marina Coach George Pascoe said. “(It) means a great deal for each school to get back on the winning side.”

Marina was on that “winning side” last year when it held off the Lions, 28-26, to give Pascoe his first victory as Vikings coach. On Friday, one team will get its first win of the 2011 season.

Marina has dropped its first two games of the season. Last week, the Vikings nearly pulled one out against Kennedy but a last-second interception in the back of the Kennedy end zone sealed a 20-18 loss. Quarterback Deshon Champion teamed up with Brayde Hill on two big scoring pass plays covering 41 and 81 yards. Champion, in his second game as Marina’s starter, threw for 259 yards. Hill had 196 receiving yards and Alex Waked rushed for a game-high 121 yards and scored Marina’s first touchdown of the game.

Waked rushed for 150 yards with two touchdowns and Hill scored twice in last year’s win over Westminster.

“We moved the ball running and passing and must continue to stay balanced,” said Pascoe of the 259 passing yards and 160 on the ground in Friday’s loss. “We stayed focused at the end and drove the field 80 yards in 1:20, then made a mistake at the very end.”

Mistakes also doomed Westminster last Friday when the Lions opened their season against Garden Grove. A costly fourth quarter that included two turnovers was the Lions’ downfall in a 14-7 loss.

Thursday’s game

Brethren Christian (1-1) vs. Century (0-1), 7 p.m., Santa Ana Stadium: Brethren Christian gave first-year Coach Pat McInally his first victory at the school last week when the Warriors downed host Arrowhead Christian, 27-14. Quarterback Sam Franklin rushed for three touchdowns to lead the Warriors.

Century hasn’t played since opening the season Sept. 2 with a 32-13 loss to Calvary Chapel/Santa Ana. Quarterback Cesar Padilla and two-way starters Angel Landeros (RB/LB) and Lino Farrris (TE/DE) are a few key players for the Centurions.

Friday’s games

Dana Hills (1-1) vs. Edison (2-0), 7 p.m., Huntington Beach High: Edison cruised to its second straight victory Sept. 8 by beating visiting Garfield of Los Angeles, 27-7. The Chargers scored all of their offensive touchdowns on the ground, getting two one-yard scoring runs from junior running back Marquis Ross and a 34-yard run by quarterback Chase Favreau. Senior cornerback Zach Salazar started the scoring with a 19-yard interception return for a touchdown.

Dana Hills is coming off a dominating 34-0 victory over San Juan Hills. Quarterback Shane Scambray threw two touchdown passes to Matthew Romano and Marcus Hughes ran for two scores. The Dolphins defense also forced four turnovers and posted a safety.

Fountain Valley (1-1) vs. Corona (0-1), 7 p.m., Corona High: Fountain Valley is looking to get back on track when it travels to face Corona. The Barons suffered their first loss of the year Friday to San Clemente, which ran its way to a 43-10 win over the Barons. Derek Huynen kicked a 38-yard field goal and back-up quarterback Chris d’Entremont, replacing injured starter Kai Fernandez, thew a second-half touchdown pass to Sean Myers.

Corona began its season Saturday with a 19-11 loss at Temecula Valley. Panthers’ quarterback Shane Truelove threw for 159 yards and rushed for a touchdown.

Huntington Beach (1-1) vs. Foothill (1-1), 7 p.m., at Tustin High: The Oilers and Knights, former Sea View League rivals, go at it again.

Huntington Beach gave up two touchdowns in the final seven minutes — including the game-winner with 29 seconds left, of last Friday’s game against Corona del Mar and the visiting Sea Kings pulled out a 28-21 victory. Chris Ogilvie rushed for a pair of touchdowns and Michael Chislock threw a first-quarter scoring pass to Nolan Biegel for the Oilers.

Foothill opened its season against rivals Tustin and Beckman in games played at Tustin High. Last week, the Knights took advantage of five Beckman turnovers to defeat the Patriots, 14-10. Trevor Oakley rushed for two touchdowns as the Knights wiped out a 10-0 deficit.

Ocean View (1-1) vs. Laguna Beach (1-0), 7 p.m., at Laguna Beach High: Both Ocean View and Laguna Beach went on the offensive last week to pick up their initial wins of the season.

Ocean View piled it on during the final three quarters against Calvary Chapel/Santa Ana, scoring all of its points to score a wild 62-34 triumph. Quarterback Timmy Robinson rushed for four touchdowns and threw two touchdown passes to Elijah Nolasco-Blas. Robinson accumulated 240 yards of offense and running back Travis Sparks-Jackson had 138 receiving yards.

Laguna Beach started its campaign Friday and rolled to a 55-7 victory over Webb. The Breakers rushed for an astounding 576 yards that was both a single-game school rushing record and surpassed the single-game record for total yardage. Robert Clemons scored on runs of 23 and 76 yards and Drake Martinez, whose brother, Taylor, is the starting quarterback for Nebraska, scored three times and rushed for a game-high 115 yards on just five carries.
