Local teams shine on gridiron

Two Huntington Beach Jr. All-American Football teams — the Midget Division Oilers and Clinic Division Oilers — registered victories on the opening day of the 2012 season Saturday.

Huntington Beach 14, Beverly Hills 0: Getting solid play on both sides of the ball, the Oilers launched their campaigns with a shutout of the visiting Gators at Huntington Beach High.

Quarterback Dylan McCoy scored once and Reid Banish had a 60-yard gain to lead the rushing attack, and the line play of Chad Phillips, Jerry Hudson and Cade Siegrist, paced the offense.

Clinic Division

Huntington Beach 13, Cerritos 6: The Oilers started their season at Huntington Beach High by holding off the Steelers.

Quarterback Nate Skorheim led the Oilers’ balanced offensive attack, rushing for 42 yards on eight carries, including touchdown runs of one and 34 yards. Tailback Aden Eckenwiler also had a big day for the Oilers, rushing for 70 yards on 13 carries from the tailback position.

Jr. Pee Wee Division

Cerritos 48, Huntington Beach 0: Several players suited up for their first game for Huntington, which was defeated by the Steelers at Gahr High in Cerritos. Quarterback AJ Gatto and newcomer Jacob Rosow turned in strong play for the Oilers.

Pop Warner FootballMighty Mite Division

Green Chargers 12, Yorba Linda 2: Huntington (3-0) overcame a first-quarter safety to down the Longhorns at Edison High Saturday.

Runs by Dane Despars and Jordan Ginnis set up Huntington’s first score, a one-yard touchdown run by Connor Provost.

Gold Chargers 22, Cypress 0: Huntington (2-1) scored three touchdowns in the first half and went on to shut down the Centurions at Edison High.

The first score came on an eight-yard run by quarterback Braeden Boyles. Kade Ayres scored on a 66-yard punt return and added the extra point. Jake McLaughlin got the final touchdown of the half on a nine-yard run, and Ayres ran for the extra point.

Pee Wee Division

Huntington Beach 16, Saddleback Valley 14: The Green Chargers (2-1) twice rallied from deficits to clip the Bears at Edison High.

Quarterback Cameron Eden scored both Huntington touchdowns and Kyle Miller converted two two-point conversion kicks. Sammy Rovano, Jack Horton, Cameron Mase, and Tanner Nelson lead the defense.

Jr. Midget Division

Huntington Beach 28, Santa Ana 0: The Green Chargers won their third straight game by dominating visiting Monarch at Edison High.

Huntington scored on its first play from scrimmage when Daniel Serrano turned in a 40-yard touchdown run. Sean Colamonico scored the second touchdown on a 40-yard sweep on Huntington’s fifth play from scrimmage. Shortly after Colamonico’s run, Chase Ault scored on a one-yard run.
