Blue Vikings earn first win

The Huntington Beach Blue Vikings posted their first win of the 2010 Pop Warner Football season Saturday by defeating the visiting South Coast Tritons, 36-6, in Pee Wee Division play at Marina High.

Huntington scored on three of its first four possessions and the Blue Vikings defense didn’t allow a point. They were led offensively by Brandon Laszlo, who rushed for three touchdowns and threw for another, a 55-yard scoring pass to Blaine Reiderich. Andrew Schiffner capped the scoring with an eight-yard run.

Nick Paulson was three for three on extra-point kicks. Other notables on the offensive side were Peter McCoy and Johnny Calise, who rushed for 58 and 55 yards, respectively. Matthew Clark and Matthew Wautlet were part of an offensive line that dominated the line of scrimmage.

Defensively, the Blue Vikings were stifling and held the Tritons to just two first downs. Conrad Myers, Kevin White, Eric Rymer and Matthew Zimmerman were standouts in the game. Clark and Laszlo recovered fumbles and Noah Murchison ended the Tritons’ first possession with an interception.

The Blue Vikings play under the lights Saturday with a 7 p.m. game against Laguna Hills at Laguna Hills High.

Jr. Pee Wee Division

Huntington Beach 19, Santa Margarita 0: The Chargers continued their winning ways by blanking the Blue Eagles. On the first play of the second offensive series, Griffin O’Connor went deep and connected with Elijah Ginnis on a 55-yard touchdown pass. On the ensuing kickoff, Logan Harris’ onside kick was recovered on the bounce by Chase Ault. The Chargers again went to the air and this time O’Connor and Ginnis hooked up on a 45-yard pass that put Huntington in scoring position. On the next play, Cameron Gonzales scored on a short run.

Just before the end of the first quarter, Shaun Colamonico took a pass from O’Connor and sprinted in for the score. Colamonico also had a great defensive effort that included a fumble recovery, a recovered onside kick and pass deflection . In addition to his onside kick recovery, Ault had an interception.

Huntington hosts the Fullerton Blue Titans at 8 a.m. Saturday at Edison High.

Jr. Mighty Mite Division

Huntington Beach 26, Rancho Santa Margarita 0: The Green Chargers earned their second shutout victory of the season by routing the Titans. Joey Valenta rushed for an early touchdown and Tanner Gunnell followed with the extra-point.

Gunnell then rushed for a score behind the blocking of Ryan Easterday, Jeremy Alcorn, Jackson Schnoor and PJ Campbell. The score increased to 20-0 just before the half when Michael Allen outran the Titans defensive to score on a long run. Jesse Sparks scored the extra point. Quarterback Brayden Johnson scored on a quarterback sneak in the fourth quarter to complete the scoring.

Jayden Davis and Connor Provost recovered fumbles and recorded sacks. Gunnell, Sparks and Alcorn all registered key tackles that helped preserve the shutout.

Flag Division

Huntington Beach 19, La Habra 18: Nick Daniels, Jerian Operana and Ethan Quick scored touchdowns and the defense turned away a potential tying extra-point as Huntington beat the heat and the host White Lions on Saturday at La Habra.

The score was tied at 6 midway through the second half. The Chargers had just gone ahead, 19-12, late in the game when La Habra returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown. It was then that the Chargers defense rose to the occasion and stopped the extra-point try.
