Barons looking to improve

The Fountain Valley Barons will be out to get their second win of the 2011 prep football season Thursday when they take on San Clemente at Westminster High.

The Barons opened their season Aug. 26 in Henderson, Nev., where they scored a wild 52-49 victory over Green Valley. Coach John Shipp has six starters back on each side of the ball, including all-league players Sean Myers, Wyatt Christensen, Philip Choi and J.D. Hinnant.

Coach’s comments: “We have some experience with quite a few kids returning who played last year,” Shipp said. “We’re young up front with only one returner on the offensive line, and nobody is back on the defensive line. But the kids are working hard and improving every week, and we’re excited about that.”

Baron bites: Former Fountain Valley defensive standout Steve Fifita joins the Barons coaching staff this year. Fifita went on to play at Utah and in the NFL with Miami and New England.
