Green Chargers pull off one-point victory

The Huntington Beach Green Chargers and Gold Chargers traveled Saturday for their second games of the 2012 Pop Warner Football season, with the two Mighty Mite Division teams ending up with different results in their road contests.

Green Chargers 7, Santa Margarita 6: Ryan Easterday scored on a quarterback sneak with four minutes left and Connor Provost ran in the extra point to lift Huntington past the Blue Eagles at Los Flores Middle School in Rancho Santa Margarita.

Santa Margarita held a 6-0 halftime lead but the Green Chargers’ second-half defense, led by Jeremy Alcorn and Jerian Operana, shut out the Blue Eagles.

The Green Chargers, who improved to 2-0, host the Yorba Linda Longhorns at 10 a.m. Saturday at Edison High.

Fullerton 20, Gold Chargers 13: In a back-and-forth contest that went down to the wire, Huntington suffered its first loss of the season at Fullerton.

Both Kade Ayres and Jake McLaughlin had big gains on reverse plays and Jackson Walters scored on a 22-yard run off a sweep toss for the Gold Chargers (1-1). Kaleb Marshall made a key stop on defense.

The Gold Chargers are home Saturday for their next game, an 8 a.m. clash against the Cypress Centurions at Edison High.

Jr. Midget Division

Huntington Beach 19, Brea 14: The Green Chargers won their second game of the season Saturday when they held off the Bengals at Edison High.

Daniel Serrano scored all three touchdowns for Huntington, which took an early lead only to see Brea pull to within a touchdown late in the third quarter. The Green Chargers defense came up with two big stops when David Atencio and Shaun Colamonico had interceptions. Colamonico intercepted a Hail Mary pass at the Huntington four yard line in the closing seconds to secure the win.

The Green Chargers host the Santa Ana Monarchs (1-1) at 2 p.m. Saturday at Edison High.

Jr. Pee Wee Division

Santa Margarita 12, Huntington 8: Cameron Eden hit Nicholas Upstill with a 22-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter, but the Green Chargers were upended in a close game by the Eagles.

Tanner Nelson, Jake Furlong and Trent Fletcher led the defense for Huntington, which hosts Saddleback Valley at 10 a.m. Saturday at Edison High.
