Road gets tougher for Edison

Five local prep football teams went into the win column last week, but this weekend’s matchups present another challenge.

The local schedule begins with a pair of games Thursday.

Thursday

Villa Park (2-0) vs. Edison (1-0), 7 p.m., Huntington Beach High: Edison starts a daunting four-week nonleague run when the Chargers open their home schedule by hosting Villa Park. It’s an early season showdown between teams ranked in the top five in the CIF Southern Section Southwest Division poll.

This is the first meeting on the gridiron between the two schools.

Second-ranked Edison kick-started its season Friday and posted a 24-0 shutout at Los Angeles Garfield. Senior quarterback Aleksander Torgersen threw for 257 yards (11 of 22) and three touchdowns. Two of those scores went to junior receiver Jeremy Maxwell (44, 55 yards), who had three receptions total 127 yards. Senior receiver Trevor Borkowski hauled in the other scoring pass on a 30-yard play. Defensively, Dylan Luther had a fumble recovery and Robert Reyes led the Chargers in tackles with 10.

“We had a lot of new guys playing on both sides of the ball,” Edison Coach Dave White said. “I thought we played very aggressively, very physically, on defense. We executed our gameplan and we were happy with that. On offense, we were inconsistent and hot and cold all night. We made some plays, but we also missed some plays.”

Villa Park already has two games under its belt. The Spartans, ranked fourth in the Southwest Division, opened with a 28-21 win two weeks ago over Righetti (No. 8, Northern Division), and last week took down Valencia/Placentia, 24-7. Through two games, running back Meki Tafuna is averaging 6.3 yards per carry and quarterback Dylan Osbourne has thrown for 190 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions.

“They are very good at running the ball, and very good against the run,” White said of the Spartans. “They definitely have been a second-half team. I think it’s going to be a very good game that will come down to the fourth quarter.”

Senior defensive end Garrett Garcia, and senior two-way lineman Miah Frost, who both missed the Garfield game due to injuries, are expected back for Villa Park, White said.

After facing the Spartans, Edison goes up against a trio of Pac-5 Division top 10 teams, Servite, Mater Dei and San Clemente.

Corona (1-0) vs. Fountain Valley (1-1), 7 p.m., Westminster High: Fountain Valley will attempt to make it two straight wins when it hosts Corona.

The Barons got their first win of the season Friday when they rallied in the second half for a 23-17 victory at Dana Hills. Senior quarterback Chris d’Entremont threw for 227 yards, junior receiver Jacob Church caught two touchdown passes and senior receiver Jason Baker also had a touchdown reception.

“I thought it was a great effort by everybody,” Fountain Valley Coach John Shipp said. “Early on, our offense didn’t play well but we made some adjustments and got better as the game went along. Our defense, though, played really, really well. I loved the energy the kids brought to the game. It was a good win.”

Corona won its season opener Friday, 27-13, over Colony. Junior running back Nick Gibson rushed for 160 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries, and also threw for a score.

“This is a very good Corona team,” Shipp said. “They’ve got some kids with exceptional speed. It’s another quality opponent for us.”

Friday

JSerra (1-0) vs. Huntington Beach (1-1), 7 p.m., Huntington Beach High: After racing to a lopsided victory against Magnolia a week ago, Huntington looks to keep things rolling against JSerra.

The Oilers are coming off a 62-0 pummeling of Magnolia. The Oilers rushed for 260 yards, led by sophomore running back Travis Heer with 74 yards and a touchdown, and junior running back Drew Becker, who ran for 67 and scored once. Junior quarterback Kai Ross threw four touchdown passes, two of which went to Maurice Barber. Eight Oilers scored touchdowns.

“It’s always nice when you get the opportunity to give guys the chance to play,” Huntington Coach Eric Lo said. “I liked the effort we gave. We broke tackles on offense, and defensively, we ran to the ball really well. That was great to see.”

JSerra started its season Friday against Long Beach Wilson and scored a 37-21 victory. Junior Casey Eugenio did everything for the Lions in that win, rushing for one score, returning a punt for another touchdown and intercepting two passes.

“They’re a very good football team that plays hard and is well-coached,” Lo said. “Their running back (Eugenio) is really good.”

Junior running back Lee Durant, who was injured (neck) on his first carry against Magnolia, will not play Friday, Lo said.

Marina (1-1) vs. Westminster (0-1), 7 p.m., Westminster High: It’s billed as the Black and Blue Game. No matter what name it goes by, the Marina-Westminster rivalry game always gets both sides fired up.

The schools have met annually since 1963.

“As always, this is a big game for Marina and Westminster,” Marina Coach George Pascoe said. “Westminster always plays good defense and Coach (Ted) McMillen will have his team ready to play.

“This game is very physical and the team that makes the fewest mistakes will probably win.”

Marina tuned up for its rival by registering a 23-14 win last week over Kennedy. The triumph also was the first win for the Vikings since a 21-14 win Sept. 16 against Westminster.

Marina piled up 221 rushing yards, led by junior quarterback Austin Sojka, who ran for 126 on 16 carries. Senior running back Adam Anunciation rushed for 61 yards and scored twice, junior Clay Fischer scored on a punt return and sophomore lineman Dominic Surace registered a safety.

“We had a great week of practice and worked our plan,” Pascoe said. “We had a good running night out of the quarterback position, and tailback. Our defense got better and made some key stops. We played with more enthusiasm and didn’t let little mistakes get us down.”

Westminster dropped its opener last week, 28-7, to Garden Grove. One big weapon for the Lions is senior defensive end/wide receiver Myron Aiava, who has committed to Utah.

Estancia (1-0) vs. Ocean View (0-1), 7 p.m., Ocean View High: Ocean View starts its home slate against a highly regarded Estancia squad.

Ocean View fell, 14-7, in its opener Saturday against Calvary Chapel/Santa Ana. The Seahawks got a pair of 100-yard rushing games from senior running backs Kyle Langley (116 yards) and Garrett Hoffman (109 yards). The duo ran behind an offensive line that Coach Luis Nunez said was “physical all night.”

Defensively, senior end Rey Soria had nine tackles and a sack.

“Our inexperience showed on crucial downs and we didn’t execute when we needed it most,” said Nunez, who made his head coaching debut Saturday.

The Seahawks were 0-3 on fourth-down plays.

“We drove into their territory all night and just couldn’t finish drives,” Nunez said. “Not to take any credit away from Calvary, but playing a Zero Week game helped them take advantage of our inexperience.”

Estancia won by shutout in its opener Friday, 17-0, against Loara. Star running back Robert Murtha ran for 166 yards and a touchdown for the Eagles, who did all of their scoring in the second half. Murtha, who rushed for 2,215 yards and 19 touchdowns a year ago, was named the Player of the Year last year in the Orange Coast League.

“We will need 11 guys to the ball this week, as Murtha is a great back,” Nunez said. “It’s going to take a team effort Friday night against a great team, but we will be ready to give it our best effort.”

Nunez said that starting tailback Daniel Valencia is still questionable for Friday’s game. He also said the Seahawks could be breaking out new, gold Nike home jerseys for their home opener.

Saturday game

Brethren Christian (2-0) vs Century (1-0), 7 p.m., Santa Ana Stadium: Brethren Christian has started the season with consecutive lopsided home wins. On Saturday, they’ll take to the road for the first time when they battle Century.

BC, coming off a 50-2 season-opening win against Animo Leadership, scored a 43-7 win Friday over Arrowhead Christian Academy. Junior quarterback Jack McInally threw six touchdown passes for the second straight week and sophomore wide receiver Guy Demazeliere was on the receiving end of four of those scoring passes.

Junior wide receiver Austin Gorrell had eight receptions and a touchdown and sophomore receiver Brandon Bryson added three catches and a score.

“Our passing game continued to excel,” BC Coach Pat McInally said. “Our team played very aggressively, but with discipline on defense and our offensive line and running backs did an outstanding job on pass protection.”

The Warriors now take on a Century team that began its season Friday with a 38-12 win over La Quinta/Westminster.

“Century looks very physical this year,” Pat McInally said. “They really handled La Quinta and we are expecting a very tough challenge this week. Stopping their running game and scoring early offensively, and grabbing the lead, are our goals.”
