Edison, Fountain Valley open with wins

The Edison and Fountain Valley football teams traveled to open their 2011 seasons last week, and both returned home with big victories. Edison went to Maui, Hawaii, to face Baldwin High on Friday and came away with a 48-10 win.

Fountain Valley traveled to Henderson, Nev., to take on Green Valley. The Barons built a big lead and held on for a 52-49 win.

In Edison’s win over Baldwin, senior quarterback Chase Favreau threw for 227 yards and four touchdowns, hitting Bryce Campbell (18 yards), Curren Provost (29 yards), Sedric Hill (66 yards) and Troy Baljeu (28 yards) for scores. Favreau also scored on a 16-yard run in the third quarter. Marquis Ross rushed for 78 yards, with touchdown runs covering 33 and two yards.

Edison scored twice before Baldwin got off its first offensive play. The Chargers led, 14-0, after one quarter and were up, 28-10, at halftime.

“It was nice to jump out and jump on them early,” Edison Coach Dave White said. “We started out slowly and on defense we were a little shaky with out tackling. I also thought we got a little bit lax in the second quarter.

“This was a good test for us. They (Baldwin) are a pretty physical team and have a few big players, but I don’t think they’ve seen a passing attack like ours. Everybody got to play and that’s always great to see. Overall, it was a good trip.”

Edison returns to action Sept. 8 against Garfield of Los Angeles at Huntington Beach High.

Fountain Valley quarterback Joshiah Fernandez threw touchdowns to Brian Brown (61 yards) and Jacob Church (11 yards) and also rushed for two other scores in the Barons’ win over Green Valley.

Mason Clevenger and Sean Myers both scored rushing touchdowns, Derek Huynen hit a 47-yard field goal and Jordan Platt scored on fumble return.

Fountain Valley is idle this week and resumes play Sept. 8 hosting San Clemente at Westminster High.

Dirtdogs win in Cooperstown

The Dirtdogs Baseball Club 12-and-Under travel team from Orange County, which included six players from Huntington Beach and one from Fountain Valley, won the Cooperstown All Star Village Under-12 national championship in Cooperstown, N.Y. on Aug. 11.

Team members Kyler Arenado, Kyle McCaulley, Dallas Baca, Adam Gooch, Shane Fullbright and Kyle May, are from Huntington Beach, and Eric Shults is from Fountain Valley. Other members of the team are Connor Brown of Costa Mesa, Billy Shaw and Coletrane Tait of Newport Beach and Tommy Verdugo and Cole Monson of Westminster.

Two other team members from Huntington Beach, Steven Kotkosky and Trevor Windisch, did not make the trip. Both are members of the Ocean View Little League Majors All-Star team that won the 2011 Little League Baseball World Series title Sunday at Williamsport, Pa.

The Dirtdogs defeated Forest City Fury of North Carolina, 1-0, in the championship game. Tait hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the sixth inning for the win. Brown struck out six and gave up just two hits and a walk in a complete-game victory.

The Dirtdogs took a No. 3-seed and 5-1 record into championship-round play. Fullbright, McCaulley and Shults all pitched in playoff games and Gooch and Arenado also saw time on the mound. McCaulley hit three home runs and Arenado added two homers in the tournament.

Baseball program hosts golf tourney

The Marina High baseball program will stage the Marina Baseball Golf Tournament on Oct. 30 at Meadowlark Golf Course, 16782 Graham St., Huntington Beach. The big event includes golfing, a raffle and live and silent auctions.

Registration starts at 10:30 a.m. followed by an 11:30 a.m. shotgun start. Dinner festivities begin at 5 p.m. The cost is $125 per player (entry fee) and $40 for the dinner/auction and raffle only.
