Edison itching to get going

For the Edison High football team, its season opener can’t come soon enough.

“We need to play,” said Edison Coach Dave White whose team will do just that at 7 p.m. Thursday when it travels to face Los Angeles Garfield at Garfield High. “Seeing teams play last week, the kids were antsy to play. We’re ready.”

The nonleague game is the first of six this week for local teams. In addition to Edison, Ocean View is also opening its season with a Saturday game against Calvary Chapel/Santa Ana. Fountain Valley, Huntington Beach, Marina and Brethren Christian, which all opened last week, play Friday games.

White had the chance to scout Garfield in its season opener last week. The Bulldogs were handled, 48-0, by St. Bonaventure, which entered the season ranked ninth in its first year in the Pac-5 Division. The Bulldogs mustered just 108 yards of total offense.

Garfield was 5-6 a year ago, one of the losses a 27-7 setback to Edison.

“Their kids are well-coached, they’re disciplined and they don’t quit,” White said of Garfield. “They had a few turnovers, which cost them against a really good St. Bonaventure team.”

Edison enters the season ranked No. 2 in the CIF Southern Section Southwest Division, behind defending-champion Tustin.

Friday

Fountain Valley (0-1) vs. Dana Hills (0-1), 7 p.m., Dana Hills High: Fountain Valley hits the road for the first time this season. The Barons opened their season last week and lost, 28-14, to Foothill.

Senior receiver Wyatt Christensen caught scoring passes of 14 and nine yards from senior quarterback Chris d’Entremont for the Barons, who had tied the score (14-14) just three plays into the fourth quarter. d’Entremont threw for 277 yards.

Fountain Valley Coach John Shipp called the opener a “humbling experience” for his squad. The Barons played from behind all night and couldn’t overcome costly mistakes. They turned the ball over three times. Foothill, which entered the game ranked sixth in the Southwest Division, was turnover free.

“Right now, we’re not as good as we thought we would be,” Shipp said. “We made too many mistakes and missed some plays. It was a battle of two offenses and their offense made more plays. They just executed better than we did, and the better team won (tonight).”

Dana Hills also lost a tough opener to Trabuco Hills last week, 17-14. Quarterback Mac Vail threw for 178 yards and a touchdown in a game the Dolphins led early on, 7-0.

Dana Hills, a former member of the South Coast League, moves this year to the Sea View League and is considered a favorite for the Sea View title.

“It’s going to be a tough game, on the road,” Shipp said after the Foothill game. “They are a good team and we need to regroup from this loss and be ready to play.”

Magnolia vs. Huntington Beach (0-1), 7 p.m., Huntington Beach High: Huntington Beach will attempt to bounce back from a season-opening defeat at El Toro when it opens its home schedule against a Magnolia team is playing its opener.

Huntington was no match last week for El Toro quarterback Conner Manning, who threw 66 passes, completing 44 of them for 454 yards and six touchdowns. The Oilers lost, 47-24.

Huntington junior quarterback Kai Ross, in his first start, accounted for more than 250 yards of total offense and scored three times. Ross also intercepted Manning, and Oilers junior linebacker Matt Tavakoli also was outstanding with 17 tackles.

The Oilers turned the ball over four times, two of which led to 14 points for the Chargers.

“Kai kept us in the game,” Huntington Beach Coach Eric Lo said. “He made a lot of key plays for us, and I thought Matt played extremely well against a very good team.”

The Oilers started the season ranked third in the Southwest Division. They come into the Magnolia game ranked No. 8.

Magnolia is unranked heading into the season. The Sentinels went 4-7 last year.

“They have some good athletes and have some size,” Lo said. “I’m really concerned about how we’re going to play.”

Kennedy (0-1) vs. Marina (0-1), 7 p.m., Westminster High: Marina looks to bounce back from its opening-game loss to El Rancho by taking on a Kennedy team also in search of its first win.

The Vikings last week rallied against El Rancho but ended up with a 28-23 setback. Senior running backs Adam Annunciation (85 yards, two touchdowns) and Eli Cabaccang (76 yards) led the ground game. Cabaccang also was the team’s leading receiver with 57 yards on three receptions. Austin Sojka, in his first start at quarterback, had 175 yards of offense and rushed for a touchdown.

Linebacker Zach Blair led the Marina defense in tackles with nine, and the junior also caused a fumble that was recovered by sophomore lineman Dominic Surace.

“We did many good things,” Marina Coach George Pascoe said. “Can’t have a kick off for a touchdown and expect to win.”

Kennedy also fell in its opener last week. The Fighting Irish were held to less than 100 yards of offense in a 42-15 loss to Esperanza.

“Kennedy is a good team and will be better than their first week showed,” Pascoe said. “They made many of the same mistakes we made.”

Arrowhead Christian (0-1) vs. Brethren Christian (1-0), 7 p.m., Ocean View High: It was an explosive start to the season Saturday for Brethren Christian, which rolled to a 50-2 victory over Animo Leadership Academy. Now, the Warriors host Arrowhead Christian Academy, which last week dropped it opener.

In the victory over Animo Leadership Academy, quarterback Jack McInally completed six of seven passes for 174 yards. Amazingly, all six of his completions went for touchdowns. Sophomore receiver Guy Demazeliere was on the receiving end of three of those passes.

McInally tied the school record for touchdown passes in a game. The junior wasn’t the only one to go into the record book; the BC defense also set a school record in sacks for a single game with 10.

“I felt after months of intense work on the practice field and in tough passing competitions, our kids were just ready to explode, which they did,” Coach Pat McInally said.

Friday’s opponent, Arrowhead Christian Academy of Redlands, fell in its season opener last week, 26-6, to Heritage Christian.

“They’re tough and aggressive,” Pat McInally said of the Eagles. “We’ll need to be focused and very physical up front to keep our passing game on track and stop their running game.”

Saturday

Calvary Chapel/Santa Ana (1-0) vs. Ocean View, 7 p.m., Ocean View High: The Luis Nunez era at Ocean View gets underway Saturday when the first-year Ocean View head coach and his squad make their season debut against Calvary Chapel.

“Excited to see our program get better each week, as the team is hungry to finally see the dividends of their hard work in the weight room and field,” Nunez said. “We are fairly healthy to start the season and looking forward to watching our kids compete. We will give it our best effort to start the season with a win.”

Nunez said senior Dallas Brogue will start at quarterback in his first varsity game. Starting tailback Daniel Valencia (hamstring injury) is listed as “probable” for the game, Nunez said.

Calvary Chapel had success in its opener, a 42-20 win Friday at Sage Hill. Quarterback Colin Kearon threw for 182 yards with two touchdowns and ran for another score, and running back Isaac Acosta-Marines rushed for 112 yards and a touchdown.

“Calvary is well-coached and is a program I believe is improving and in the right direction,” Nunez said. “We have a great Week 1 challenge to see how we will fare with teams in our (Southern) division.”
