Locals fare well at Huntington Beach Bodysurfing Championships

Leading a large contingent of Huntington Beach Junior Lifeguards, captains Ada Jasper and Matt Henry won their age divisions Aug. 11 at the fourth annual Chubascos Huntington Beach Bodysurfing Championships at 9th Street in Huntington Beach. The Juniors took home several medals and prizes in the 19-and-under age division. Henry also won the Grand Champion’s heat that included male and female winners in all age divisions.

Henry, who lives in Fountain Valley, advanced to the Grand Final by getting past Mustafa Hassan in the Men’s 20-39 age division. The Master Men’s 40-59 age division was won by previous Grand Champion Eric Ackerman of Dana Point. The division also included past champions Richard Loughridge of Ocean Beach, and Mark Thon of Huntington Beach. Thon is a former World Bodysurfing Grand Champion.

Jasper, of Huntington Beach, won the Women’s 20-and-Up division. Mark Johnson, also of Huntington Beach, won the Men’s Legends 60-and-Up division.

The competition drew more than 130 entries from Southern California to the Bay Area, and as far away as the East Coast. The contest was held prior to the World Bodysurfing Championships in Oceanside.
