Tanabe finishes second at junior tournament

Issei Tanabe of Huntington Beach finished second at the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships at the PGA National Resort and Spa in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., Sunday.

The 11-year-old and Tian Lang Guan of China were tied with a three-day 215 at the end of the third and final round. Guan won the boys’ 10-11 division after surviving five sudden-death playoff holes. Hundreds of junior golfers, ages 10 to 18 from 43 states and 34 nations, competed at the annual tournament.

Tanabe is scheduled to compete at the 11th annual U.S. Kids Golf National Championships, beginning Tuesday at Pinehurst, N.C.

Lifeguard championships start Wednesday

More than 1,000 lifeguards and junior lifeguards from across the country are expected to compete at the United States Lifesaving Association National Lifeguard Championships, beginning Wednesday.

The three-day competition, hosted by the Huntington State Beach Lifeguard Assn., is at Huntington State Beach (Beach Boulevard and Pacific Coast Highway). Professional Lifeguards (ages 17 to 75) and Junior Lifeguards (9 to 17) will compete in water and beach course events that challenge their lifesaving skills. Competition highlights include a Landline Rescue Relay, Ironman and Ironwoman events and Beach Flags. Admission is free. For more information, visit https://www.uslanationals.org.

Swim program begins Monday at Golden West

Golden West College is offering one of the most comprehensive swim lesson programs in the county. The fourth and final summer session begins Monday at the Golden West College pool. The session, which ends Aug. 12, runs from 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. through Thursday. The cost is $50 per child. Registration can be taken at the pool deck Monday.

Lifeletics baseball camp starts Monday

The Lifeletics Summer Baseball Camp, a five-day workout involving elite instruction from professional coaches, will holds its final camp session at Wardlow Park, home of Huntington Valley Little League, starting Monday. The camp runs through Aug. 6.

Lebard Park, home of Seaview Little League, will host the final two summer camp sessions Aug. 16 to 20 and Aug. 23 to 27. All academy sessions are from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Morning stations will blend individual instruction with station-to-station work (pitching, hitting, fielding, outfield, repetitions), with each athlete receiving small-group private instruction in each station. Following a short break, the itinerary continues with quick-hitting, high-energy station instruction in fundamental areas such as rundowns, cuts/relays, team defense, skills, baseball athleticism and swing repetition.

The Summer Academy, now in its 10th year, also involves an Olympic-style competition as well as game competition and position-specific training. Lifeletics’ Format B involves game competition, as well.
