NHB Black 01 captures Revolution Cup

The North Huntington Beach Futbol Club Black 01 girls’ soccer team won its second tournament of the season Sunday by claiming its division at the O.C. Revolution Cup.

NHB had no problem with Carlsbad Wave FC G9 Black in its tournament opener Saturday, taking game one by a 9-0 score. Jayd Sprague, Trinity Rodman, Lori Mandarino, Katie Freeman and Megan Larson scored goals and Diana Naughton and Camille Heidelbaugh kept the right side of the field strong throughout the game. In its second game, NHB outshot Pateadores G01, 16-0, and posted a 1-0 victory. Leading NHB’s defensive charge was Mandarino, Freeman, Cece Odou, Peyton Kassouf and Delaney Trounce.

On Sunday, NHB registered its third straight tournament shutout in a 2-0 win over Freedom FC G01 from Chino Hills. NHB scored in the opening minutes when Larson sent a cross from the right that was first timed into the side net by Alexis Beaulac. Maddy Alaluf recorded her third shutout of the weekend.

The championship game pitted NHB against Empire of Corona. NHB fell behind, 1-0, but came back to claim a 2-1 win. After trailing, NHB answered when Sprague hit a half volley shot off a Larson cross into the back of the net to tie the score. In the second half, NHB continued to put pressure on Empire. That pressure led to a run down the right side by Rodman, who struck the ball from the top of the box and placed it in the upper corner of the goal.

Softball

Kaos, the Huntington Beach Girls Softball 10-and-Under Gold All-Star team, continued its winning ways by taking its division June 26 at the Southern California Amateur Softball Assn. Central District “B” tournament.

Kaos, which was coming off winning the Laguna Niguel Sea Country Classic tournament June 19, emerged as champion from a field of 19 Orange County-based teams vying for the title at Mile Square Park in Fountain Valley. The squad scored wins over Santa Ana, Cypress and Orange Canyon before meeting Irvine in the championship series. Kaos dropped the opening game between the teams, 4-3, but came back to take a 1-0 win in the final.

The tournament championship earned Kaos a spot to in the ASA ‘B’ State Championship tournament that starts Friday in Lancaster.

Kaos swept its way to the six victories to win the Laguna Niguel Sea Country Classic that ran June 17-19. The locals defeated Aliso Viejo and Mission Viejo in pool play, and in elimination play, recorded wins over Alpine, Tustin and La Mirada. Kaos finished the three-day event with a shutout of Camarillo in the championship game.

Kaos is: Danika McKee, Kendall Henshheid, Heather Wagoner, Hannah Gorton, Greta Wessel, Cailyn Chang, Sophia Peterson, Makayla Nieto, Amanda Valle, Valerie Rudd, Samantha Ritchie, Danika McKee, Makayla Nieto and Sage Malvin. The team is managed by Aimee Valle. Coaches are Craig Peterson, Tony Wagoner and Chris Malvin.

Swimming

Golden West Swim Club member Nora Deleske won one event and earned top-five finishes in two others at the June Age Group Invitational swim meet June 26 at La Mirada. The 12-year-old won the 100-meter girls’ breaststroke with a time of 1 minute 19.49 seconds. The mark also was a qualifying time for this month’s L.A. Invitational at USC. Deleske also was second in the 50 breaststroke at 37.23 and fifth in the 200 individual medley at 2:37.02.

On July 2, Deleske was one of 11 athletes to be named to the Southern California Swimming Pacific Coast All-Star girls’ 11-12 team. The squad will compete in August at the North American Challenge Cup in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. The Pacific Coast All-Stars will compete against teams from Canada, Mexico, the Pacific and the Pacific Northwest.
