High School Roundup: Torgersen shines in All-Star game

Quarterback Alek Torgersen of Edison High threw a 35-yard touchdown late in the first half of Friday’s Orange County North-South All-Star Football Game at Orange Coast College and it proved to be enough for the South, which took a 7-3 victory.

Torgersen, who will attend the University of Pennsylvania, was seven of 15 for 90 yards. He also rushed 12 times for 49 yards and was selected the Offensive Player of the Game.

Torgersen’s scoring pass went to wide receiver Scott Hoover of San Juan Hills and it put the South in front to stay with 4:46 left before halftime.

Marina lineman Izak Faoa also had a big game for the North. He recorded four sacks and shared the Defensive Player of the Game award with the South defensive end Garrett Marino (Mission Viejo) who also registered four sacks.

Torgersen’s Edison teammates, Trenton Aschoff and Miah Frost, and Huntington Beach’s Milo Aviles, also played for the South.

The 54th annual game was played at LeBard Stadium. Friday’s win put the South, which has won five-straight against the North, into the series lead at 26-25-3.

Summer Boys’ Basketball

Edison: The Chargers went 3-1 last weekend at the Servite tournament. The Chargers defeated Wenatchee (Washington), Riverside Christian, and Mater Dei, beating the Monarchs Coach Rich Boyce said on a 60-foot buzzer-beating three-point shot by guard AJ Garrity.

Their lone loss was to Riverside ML King, a game in which the Chargers missed 23 free throws.

Fountain Valley: The Barons returned home earlier this week from playing four tournament games at Arizona Christian University in Phoenix. They went 3-1 and won their division with wins against Cactus Shadows of Cave Creek, Ariz. (78-65), in overtime against Palo Verde of Tucson, Ariz. (95-93), and North Canyon of Phoenix (103-78).

The Barons start play on Friday at the Concordia Tournament, which runs through Sunday at Concordia University in Irvine.

Huntington Beach: The Oilers start play at the George Yardley Tournament at 4 p.m. Friday at Newport Harbor. They will face Torrance in an opening game.

Marina: The Vikings lost to Ocean View, in league play where they are 2-2. They were edged by Orange Lutheran in their opening game at the Bosco tournament.

In previous summer tournament play, Marina went 4-2 at Cal State Monterey Bay, 3-2 at the University of San Diego, and 1-4 at UC Irvine.

The Vikings continue league play at home at 7:30 p.m. Monday. Other upcoming 7:30 p.m. home games are Wednesday, July 15 and July 17.

Brethren Christian: The Warriors start play at 11 a.m. Friday at the George Yardley Tournament against Corona del Mar. BC is in a bracket that includes Edison, Huntington Beach, Mater Dei, Mission Viejo and El Toro.

BC has fared well in several, previous summer tournaments. The Warriors’ most recent tourney ended Sunday at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, where they finished 2-3. Wins were against University (Irvine) and Villanova Prep. Losses were to Sonora, eventual champion Santa Barbara, and Oak Park.

The Warriors started at summer play at the Southern California Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Assn. Summer Classic where they defeated Yorba Linda and Loara, and lost to Tustin. They then went 4-0 at the Saddleback Valley Christian tournament where they defeated Eastside Christian, Orangewood Academy, Riverside Christian, and the Mater Dei junior varsity team.

BC went 3-1 at the Palm Springs tournament with wins against Vista Murrieta, Indio and Dinuba (northern California), and a loss to Granada Hills.

Summer Baseball

Huntington Beach: The Oilers fell in American Legion Baseball summer play Monday, 6-3, at JSerra. Marcus Mayorga and Chad Minato both doubled and scored a run for the Oilers.

Huntington also dropped a 4-1 game Friday to visiting El Toro. Tyler Murray homered for the Oilers, who are 6-3-1 in the league.

“Coaches use the summer to evaluate all of their players and to see how they perform in game situations,” Huntington Coach Benji Medure said. “I love the summertime because I get to see kids play that normally don’t. We know what we have coming back, but I like seeing the second string guys compete.”

Ocean View: The Seahawks started the week with a 1-0 victory Monday over host Corona del Mar. Combining on the pitching shutout were junior Steven Cotton, sophomores Braydon Salzman and Brian Schlosser, and junior Mikey Giacone.

It was the second straight shutout win for Ocean View which downed visiting Santa Ana, 10-0, on Saturday. Dustin Fisher, Cotton, Ramon Sepulveda and Giacone shared pitching duties. Sepulveda threw one inning while the other pitchers threw two innings each. The four combined for 12 strikeouts with six going to Giacone who struck out all six batters he faced.

The Ocean View offense was led by Fisher with two singles, and Bobby Evans who doubled and singled.
