Ocean View Rockies edge Huntington Valley for District 62 title

In a wild Major Division final that saw featured 13 runs, most of which were unearned, the Ocean View Rockies claimed the District 62 banner after holding on for a 7-6 victory over the Huntington Valley Sooners on Saturday at Huntington Valley’s Inspiration Field.

“That was a tough one,” Ocean View Manager Tod Minato said after his team came back from a 2-0 deficit, built a 7-2 lead and then fended off a Huntington Valley charge over the final three innings. “Coming to Huntington Valley, then having to play their No. 1-seed, we knew this game would be tough. And it was.”

The Rockies, who finished 19-7, scored their final run with two out in the top of the fourth when Ben McConnell ripped a solo home run over the fence in center field, giving his team a 7-2 cushion.

Huntington Valley scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth to get within 7-5. The Sooners scored their final run in the bottom of the sixth when Stan Scarborough picked up his second hit of the game and later scored. The Sooners had the tying run at second base but Ocean View relief pitcher Cole Minato ended the game with a strike out.

“We called it ‘Sooner Magic,’ ” Huntington Valley Coach Scott Glascoe said of his team’s comeback abilities. “We did it Thursday against Robinwood, and we nearly did it again today. This was just our third loss this year.”

The Sooners ended their year 22-3.

Minor A Division

Robinwood Titans 3, Ocean View Muckdogs 0: Andrew Baldwin hit a solo home run in the third inning to end a scoreless game and Robinwood went on to get a district banner by shutting out the Muckdogs.

The Titans, who finished the year 15-8-1, were the No. 2 team from Robinwood. The Muckdogs were the No. 1 team from Ocean View.

“I’m extremely proud of the way the kids played,” Titans Coach Dale Baldwin said. “This team faced some obstacles early on in the season and had to win 11 straight games to accomplish what they did. These kids had a lot of determination and never gave up.”

The Robinwood Titans are: Andrew Baldwin, Cameron Bayles, Zeek Franco, Bradley Fronek, Ryan Gregory, Kailob Haag, Kai Kasserman, Tyler Kist, Kyle Krmpotich, Riley Sterzer, Nicholas Swartz and Michael Turner. Manager: Dale Baldwin. Coaches: Greg Fronek, Todd Gregory.

Minor B Division

Ocean View Aeros 6, Fountain Valley Orioles 5: Ocean View staged a one-out, four-run rally in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull out a one-run victory to win the district title and complete an 18-0 season.

Christian Claypool singled with one out in the bottom of the sixth to trigger the Aeros’ comeback. Jimmy Legg, who reached base after being hit by a pitch, scored the winning run by stealing home.

The Aeros went undefeated (10-0) during OVLL regular-season play, went 4-0 in the league’s postseason Minor B tournament and then went 4-0 in district play to complete a perfect season.

The Ocean View Aeros are: Mason Baumann, Christian Claypool, Aiden Daniels, Matt Hernandez, Jimmy Legg, Chad Lux, Connor McKelvey, Jack McKelvey, Mikey Pantel, Michael Rini and Ty Robbins. Manager: Dana Lux. Coaches: Scott Pantel, Laurie Baumann.

In the Junior Division final Saturday at Ocean View High, Fountain Valley won the district title by defeating Huntington Valley No. 1, 8-4.

District 62 All-Star Tournament

Little League All-Star teams in the Major, 9/10 and 10/11 divisions from Cosa Mesa American, Costa Mesa National, Fountain Valley, Huntington Valley, Ocean View, Robinwood, Seaview and Westminster, start play Saturday at the double-elimination District 62 All-Stars Tournament at Mile Square Park in Fountain Valley. The Junior Division All-Stars tournament also starts Saturday and is at Ocean View High.

The Ocean View Major All-Star team won the district title a year ago and went on to reach the Little League World Series and win the world title last August at Williamsport, Pa.
