Dodgers rally to defeat Padres [UPDATED]

The Ocean View Dodgers overcame a slow start and a wild finish to score a 9-5 victory Saturday over the Westminster Padres in a Majors Division game at the District 62 Tournament of Champions.

Ocean View starter Jack Furry was strong in his three innings on the mound, getting five strikeouts and giving up just one hit. Hagen Danner threw the fourth and fifth innings and struck out six and allowed a walk.

Ocean View’s offense came to life in the second inning when Jake Haffner hit a lead-off home run. Nick Welch and Noah Willis followed Haffner’s blast with back-to-back singles and both later scored on wild pitches. Ethan Iles drew a walk and with two outs, Brandon Nicholson, Hagen and Haffner hit consecutive singles, with Iles scoring.

The lead later grew to 7-0 when Dylan Chennault had a one-out single and scored on a wild pitch and Furry hit an opposite-field home run to push the lead to 7-0. It grew to 9-0 when Welch singled and later scored on Kyle Stubbs’ sacrifice fly and Danner hit an opposite-field home run.

Westminster came back for five runs in the sixth but Nicholson came in to record the game’s final two outs to advance Ocean View.

Ocean View Braves 5, Westminster Angels 1: Round one of the Tournament of Champions was played at Huntington Valley Little League Saturday. Ocean View starting pitcher Braydon Salzman didn’t allow a run. Nathan Crocker singled during a two-run first-inning by the Braves. In the second inning the Braves scored one more on a double by Jacob Sievers. James Williams later had a sacrifice RBI and Salzman scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-0.

Pitching in relief for the Braves were Brian Schlosser who threw the fifth and Jason Mayorga who threw the sixth. The Angels scored their lone run in the sixth when Ronnie Natera came home on a Braves’ error. The Braves then ended the game on a double play by between Jackson Roeder, Salzman and Schlosser.

Minor B Division

Seaview Yankees 15, Fountain Valley Pirates 1: Stellar pitching by Noah Perelman, Clay Kaneko and Ethan Eberhardt limited Fountain Valley to just one run as Seaview eliminated the Pirates in a first-round game Saturday at Huntington Valley Little League.

Jesse Sparks, Levi Perelman and Josh Jones supplied the big bats as Seaview Yankees moved on.

Ocean View Rockhounds 8, Seaview Angels 5: Starting pitcher Cole Kaplan struck out eight and Thomas Williams broke open a close game with a two-run double in the fourth inning to spark the Rockhounds to a first-round victory in the Minor B District 62 Tournament of Champions on Monday (June 13) at Robinwood Little League. Kaplan allowed only one hit in 2 2/3 innings with each of his outs coming via strikeouts.

The Rockhounds, who won Ocean View’s Minor B postseason tournament, erupted for five runs in the fourth inning highlighted by Williams’ double to the gap in right-center field. Chance DiMarco followed with a sharp single to left to bring in two more runs. Kaplan lined a single to center field and Shane Hoodman capped the outburst with a run-scoring single to increase the Rockhounds’ lead to 8-2.

DiMarco, Williams and Hoodman provided 3 1/3 innings of solid relief.

Rockhounds catcher Eric Church contributed a double and made the game’s pivotal defensive play in the sixth by fielding a carom on a wild pitch and hustling back to tag out an Angels’ runner trying to score.

Nick Chumacero reached base three times while David Drigla and Tyler La Force each got on base twice for the Rockhounds who are 16-4-1 overall. Reilly Kells, Lisa Tobin and Kaleb Plewa provided spirited at-bats as well for the Rockhounds.

Robinwood Warriors 9, Robinwood Hawkeyes 2

The Hawkeyes struck first but the Warriors scored the game’s next nine runs en route to winning the all-Robinwood finale.

A solo home run in the top of the first inning by Andrew Sojkagave the Hawkeyes their only lead of the game. They wouldn’t score again until the top of the sixth when Jair Lozoya also hit a solo homer. Between those two hits, the Warriors were in control.

An RBI single by the Warriors’ Eli Duval in the bottom-half of the first scored the tying run. The Warriors then turned four hits in the third inning into four more runs, scored their sixth run on a passed ball in the bottom of the fourth and put the game away by scoring three runs in the fifth, where Duval collected his second hit and second RBI of the game.

Rocco Peppi also had two hits for the Warriors and also recorded the pitching win by throwing the first five innings. Dylan Holt closed on the mound. Both pitchers allowed just one hit.

“The boys’ battled hard and played incredibly well,” Warriors Manager Todd Arita said. “They really stuck together and played like true champions today.”

During the tournament, Peppi struck out 19 and allowed just two runs in three games on the mound. Dylan Holt went eight for nine with three home runs, a triple, two doubles, two walks and nine RBIs.

The Warriors won the district title by defeating Westminster (10-0), Huntington Valley (5-2), Seaview (7-5) and the Hawkeyes. Ryan Sueki turned in a double play in the fifth inning and Richard Imagawa made an over-the-shoulder catch in the sixth to end the game, in the 7-5 semifinal win over Seaview.
