District 62 tourney nearing finish line

The 2012 Little League District 62 Tournament of Champions continues Thursday with semifinal-round action in three divisions at the playing fields of Huntington Valley (Area 1) and Ocean View (Area 2).

Semifinal play in Major, Minor A and Minor B divisions starts at 5 p.m. The winners advance to Saturday’s championship finals. All division finals start at 10 a.m. at Huntington Valley.

In the Junior tournament, Huntington Valley No. 1 edged Huntington Valley No. 2, 13-12, on Monday to advance to Saturday’s title game. Huntington Valley will face either Fountain Valley or Ocean View No. 2 in the division final. The Junior final is a 1 p.m. start at Ocean View High.

Major DivisionArea 1

Robinwood Stanford Trees 13, Costa Mesa American Pirates 2: The Stanford Trees, the No. 2 team from Robinwood, defeated Costa Mesa American for the third time this season to move on in the tournament.

Rocco Peppi went four for five with two doubles and two runs batted in, Troy Kent three for four with a pair of doubles, and Dylan Holt went two for two with two doubles, two RBIs and walked twice.

Westminster Angels 10, Fountain Valley Twins 3: Fountain Valley took the early lead but Westminster scored 10 consecutive runs and went on to win an opening game Saturday at Ocean View.

The Twins, the No. 1 team from Fountain Valley, grabbed a 1-0 lead in their first at-bat when Luke Wells singled and eventually scored on a single by Tanner Motske. The Angels, the No. 2 representative from Westminster, responded by scoring twice in the bottom of the first inning, then added two more runs in both the third and fourth innings. They scored four more runs in the fifth to extend their lead to 10-1.

Jacob Vu had three hits and two RBIs for Westminster.

Minor A Division

Seaview Phillies 3, Costa Mesa National Bulldogs 0: Strong pitching and clutch hitting were the key to Seaview’s first-round victory over Coast Mesa National.

The Phillies, the top team from Seaview, ended a scoreless game in the fourth inning behind clutch hitting by Tyler Green, a two-run single by Conner Ahlstrom and an RBI double by Matt Undlin that hit the top of the fence. Drake Plotkin and Jack Forman were dominant on the mound and combined for the shutout.

Minor B Division

Seaview Angels 8, Huntington Valley Tar Heels 6: The Angels advanced by defeating the Tar Heels in a tight game. Jackson Schnoor and Jack Krueger gave strong pitching performances and Schnoor, Gavin Taber, Anthony Willhite, Will Hooper and Jack Klein had timely hits for the Angels.

AYSO Soccer

Alyx Merickel picked the most opportune time to score her first goal of the year and it gave Fountain Valley’s Kiss My Grass the Girls’ Under-19 Division title at the Mission Viejo Classic Soccer Tournament on Sunday. Merickel powered a shot in to the upper corner with 13 minutes remaining for the game’s only score, and Kiss My Grass held on for a 1-0 victory over the Rancho Cucamonga Flames in the title game.

Fountain Valley (Region 5) went 3-0 in pool play, where it outscored its opponents, 6-1.

Kiss My Grass finished the spring season with a 13-game unbeaten streak, a 15-2-2 record and outscored its opponents, 43-13.
