Locals Amaral, Filia-Snyder advance to Omaha

Huntington Beach High grad Beau Amaral, a junior outfielder at UCLA, and Edison High grad Eric Filia-Snyder, a freshman outfielder for the Bruins, are in Omaha for the 2012 College World Series. The Bruins, the No. 2 seed, open World Series play Friday ( against Stony Brook (New York).

UCLA (47-14) won the Los Angeles Super Regional by sweeping TCU last weekend. The Bruins beat the Horned Frogs, 6-2, in the Super Regional opener Friday, and clinched the title with a 4-1 win Saturday. Amaral, who starts in center field, had a hit in Saturday’s win and has been one of the Bruins’ top hitters the past two years.

UCLA is making its second appearance in three years in Omaha. Amaral was a freshman with the Bruins when they finished runner-up to South Carolina for the 2010 national championship.

Last week, Amaral was taken by the Cincinnati Reds in the seventh round (232 overall) of the 2012 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.

Seahawk hoops program begins Monday

Seahawk Boys’ Basketball at Ocean View High is offering a Summer Boys’ Basketball Program, starting Monday. The program includes practices and instruction from the Ocean View coaching staff, weekly summer league games and weekend tournaments. The tentative Monday through Thursday practice schedule is 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. for incoming freshmen (who start June 25), and 11:30 a.m. to 1: p.m. for varsity, junior varsity and sophomore players. The program runs through July 27 and costs $285 per player.

Ocean View also is offering an Elementary and Middle School Basketball Camps (grades 2-8) June 25-28 and July 9-12. The cost per week per camper is $65. Instruction will be held daily from 9:30 to 11 a.m.

Youth baseball camp starts June 21

Holmes to head basketball camp

The 21st annual Roger Holmes Youth Basketball Camp starts June 25 at the Fountain Valley High gym. The camp runs from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Monday through Thursday through July 19 and is open to youth grades third through eighth. For information, email Holmes at rholmes@baronbasketball.net.

Barons golf tournament is June 25

The Fountain Valley High School Football Boosters is hosting the seventh annual “Moose Invitational” Golf Tournament on June 25 at the Classic Course at Mile Square Park in Fountain Valley. The cost is $150 per golfer, which includes contests and prizes. Registration for the event is at https://www.barongolf.com.

The annual event helps raise money for the Fountain Valley football program and the Michael Musso Memorial Fund. Musso, a 2004 graduate of Fountain Valley High School, lost his life in a car accident in 2005. Through the fundraiser, a scholarship is given to a four-year Barons football player each year.

Baseball camps registration now open

Lifeletics Baseball Summer Camps begins its eight weeks of instruction June 25 in Huntington Beach. Camps run from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday through Aug. 17. The cost per camper is as follows: one week ($199); two weeks ($379); three weeks ($539); fourth week at no cost).

Lifeletics Baseball, located in Huntington Beach, also offers camps in Newport Beach and South Orange County (Santa Margarita, Ladera Ranch and Trabuco Canyon).
