Twins outlast Red Sox in nine innings

In the first playoff game of a best-of-three Majors Division playoff series between the Twins and Red Sox at Fountain Valley Little League, it was the Twins who came away with a 7-5 victory on Tanner Motske’s game-winning hit in a game that went nine innings and lasted 2 hours, 40 minutes at Mile Square Park.

The Twins won the division’s first-half title, the Red Sox the second-half championship.

Riley Hanson of the Twins led all hitters by reaching base five times in five plate appearances, getting a double and single to go along with three stolen bases and four runs scored. Garrett Gilmore was two for five with two runs batted in and a run scored, Motske had two hits and two RBIs and Jon Kerchenfaut singled, walked and had a RBI.

Hanson also started on the mound and threw 5 2/3 innings and recorded 11 strikeouts. Nick Taylor threw 3 1/3 innings of relief for the win. He didn’t allow a run and gave up three hits and two walks with three strikeouts.

For the Red Sox, Timmy Knowles went three for five with an RBI double, run scored and stolen base and Brian Ash had an RBI double and scored a run. Parker Smith had a RBI double, walked and scored a run and threw 4 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits with two walks and eight strikeouts. Kyle Adams pitched 4 1/3 innings of relief and allowed two runs on three hits with four walks and six strikeouts.

Red Sox 9, Twins 6: Ian Collins had two hits — including a two-run double — and two runs, Parker Smith went two for four with an RBI and run scored, and Timmy Knowles had an RBI doubled and scored once as the Red Sox defeated the Twins in the final game of the regular season for both teams. Chris Schlepphorst also singled and scored and Brian Ash doubled. Luke Bundeson pitched three innings and allowed one run on three hits and struck out three.

Riley Hanson went two for three with a double and run scored, Steven Gonzalez walked twice, was hit by a pitch and scored twice, Jon Kerchenfaut had an RBI triple and Brian Allen had an RBI double.

Allen also made an impressive pitching debut by giving up one earned run and striking out five in two innings. Mark Volkert also made his debut and didn’t allow an earned run and struck out one in one inning. Shane McCarthy through four pitches in one shutout inning.

Ocean View Little League

Braves 1, Rockies 0: Braydon Salzman threw a no-hit shutout as the Braves downed the Rockies in a second-round Majors Division postseason playoff game. The Braves scored the game’s only run in the first inning when Nathan Crocker singled home Salzman.

Starter Justin Cianca and relievers Zeke Ziegler and Braydon Wallace pitched for the Rockies.
