Ilyas wins CIF crown

Fountain Valley’s Hassan Ilyas won the 1 boys’ 300 hurdles Saturday at the CIF Southern Section Track and Field Division 1 finals at Cerritos College in Norwalk. The senior won the event in a time of 38.33 seconds. Ilyas also competed in the triple jump and finished eighth at 44 feet 1/2.

In the Division 1 boys’ 1,600 meters, Marina senior Karl Baranov ran 4:15.82 to finish sixth, one spot ahead of Fountain Valley senior Luis Morales, who ran a 4:16.65.

Ramon Vargas of Huntington Beach came up with a pair of third-place finishes in the Division 2 final. The junior finished in 14.40 in the 110 hurdles and in 38.30 in the 300 hurdles. Senior Sam Barkley of Mater Dei (14.08, 37.51) won both events and repeated as 300 hurdles champion.

Senior Sara Van Dyke of Marina placed fifth in the Division 1 girls’ 800 with a time of 2:11.92. In the Division 1 girls’ 1,600, senior Catherine Martinez of Fountain Valley ran a 4:56.54 and finished third.

In girls’ Division 2, freshman Amanda Honn of Huntington Beach took fifth place in the girls’ 3,200 at 10:49.15. Huntington sophomore Ashley Donohoe (123-03) was sixth in the discus and Oilers junior Amy Loschiavo was fifth in the pole vault.

For Edison, junior Lauren Grego was ninth in the 800 meters at 2:20.74, sophomore Anna Lindsey (16-5) was seventh in the long jump and junior Karen Snapper (11-03) and senior Monica Danielson (10-09) were sixth and ninth, respectively, in the pole vault.

The CIF Masters Meet is Friday at Cerritos College.

Boys’ Golf

Marina senior Jesse Heinrichs shot 79 Monday but missed the cut at the CIF Southern Section Individual Golf Finals at Industry Hills Golf Course.

Heinrichs, who tied for 55th, was one of four Sunset League golfers to qualify for a final that included 104 golfers. The cut Monday at the Babe Zaharias course was 75. John Lee of Los Alamitos was the only Sunset golfer to advance. Lee shot 71 to finish fourth after losing a playoff for third-place to Ryan Tetrault of Villa Park.

“I am very proud of his accomplishments this year and over his career at Marina,” said Marina Coach Jim Morris, who noted that Heinrichs hopes to play next year at Orange Coast College with former Vikings Mike Squillace and Jeff Fuzzard.

Andre Vu of Fountain Valley and Jonathan Young of Los Alamitos were the other two Sunset golfers in the tournament. Vu shot 78 and tied for 48th. Young shot 81 and tied for 71st.

The top 28 golfers from Monday advance to the Southern California Golf Assn. tournament Tuesday at Brookside Golf Course in Pasadena.
