Offense, pitching pave way to Angels victory in Seaview Little League

Four pitchers combined for a no-hitter Saturday and the Angels took a 13-1 victory from the Cubs in a Seaview Little League Minor A Division first-round playoff game.

Chandler Kane, Donovan Phillips, Noah Perelman and Niko Colburn teamed up on the mound to stifle the Cubs with nine strikeouts. The foursome was backed a solid defense including plays from Spencer Powley and Lalito Martinez.

The Angels racked up 14 hits, including a double by Noah Perelman, a double and two singles by Sean McCrimmon, triple by Nico Colburn and doubles by Dylan Harrigan, Donovan Phillips and Andrew Lytle.

Ocean View Little LeagueMinor A Division

Mud Hens 10, Red Wings 3: In a first-round tournament game, the Mud Hens overcame a 3-0 deficit to get the win. Hits in the opening inning by Cole Kaplan, Jaron Wallace, Shane Hoodman and Cody Seacat led to three runs for the Red Wings. The Mud Hens stormed back, getting runs batted in from Kyle Roeder, Zander Fletcher, Jag Burden and Nick Skorheim. Chance DiMarco and closer Thomas Williams shared the mound for the Mud Hens and Burden made a big catch in center field.

River Cats 13, Express 6: The River Cats jumped out to a 9-0 lead and went on to defeat the Express on Saturday. A three-run triple by Paul Wagner, an RBI double by Sam Myers and an RBI double by Chris Soto led to a five-run third inning for the River Cats. Wagner finished with two hits and three RBIs. Myers also had a two-run single.

The Express pulled to within 9-5 after three innings behind a two-run doubles by Drew Lottsfeldt and Dylan Youngsma.

Minor B Division

Mets 14, Thunder 13: The teams combined for 21 hits and seven lead changes in a game won by the Mets on Sunday. An RBI single by Joey Gentilella scored Elijah Beyer for the go-ahead run in the sixth inning.

Antonio Ventimiglia had three hits, including a double and three RBIs, and Jack Jernigan had an RBI single for the Mets.

Mudcats 14, Hooks 12: Cade Haakenson, William Brooks and Angel Zamora all scored three times Saturday as the No. 9-seed Mudcats knocked off the No. 6-seed Hooks in playoff action.

Mudcats 9, Lookouts 8: The Mudcats took a 7-0 lead but it took an infield single by Cade Haakenson in the top of the eighth inning that led to the winning run, and the Mudcats went on to a 9-8 win over the No. 3-seed Lookouts.

Trailing, 7-0, the Lookouts rallied behind Hayden Peebles, Gavin Kells, A.J. Hurtado and Brandon Wood to cut the deficit to 7-6, and then tied the score in the bottom of the sixth to send the game to extra innings. Down, 9-7, going into the bottom of the eighth, the Lookouts scored a run to make it, 9-8, and loaded the bases with one out. Tanner Harris then came in to pitch for the Mudcats and struck out the next two batters to close out the win.

Starting pitcher Christopher Roberts threw three shutout innings for the Mudcats.

Lookouts 10, Mets 9: A.J. Hurtado beat out an infield single to bring home Gavin Kells for the walk-off victory, as the Lookouts kept their season alive with a two-run rally in the sixth.

The Lookouts trailed, 9-8, going into the their final at-bat. Logan Ronchi walked to open the sixth inning and later scored on a throwing error to tie the score. Kells drew a two-out walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch and stole third, setting up Hurtado’s heroics. Hurtado finished with three hits.

For the Mets, Joey Gentilella went three for three with a two-run, opposite-field home run in the fifth inning that helped the Mets build their lead to 8-4. Antonio Ventimiglia had two hits, including a double, and shortstop Miles Elliott made a pair of lunging catches on line drives to shut down Lookout rallies.

The Lookouts (12-5-1) tied the score with a four-run rally in the bottom of the fifth, highlighted by Kells’ RBI double. Brandon Wood scored the tying run on a wild pitch.

In his first starting assignment, Lookouts pitcher Isaac Ballinas turned in a solid 2 2/3 innings. Ethan Choi got the victory in relief and David Drigla scored twice and made a key catch in right field.

Minor C Division

Bees vs. Threshers: The two teams concluded their respective seasons Saturday. For the Threshers, both Ryland Shuster and Luke Walpole had all-around games as both pitched and contributed on offense. Shuster had an RBI double in the second inning and Alex Yee also doubled.

For the Bees, Kyle Palmer struck out the side during his inning on the mound, and Matthew Aguirre and Kyle Donoho contributed at the plate.

Fountain Valley Little LeagueMajors Division

Twins 5, Angels 4: In a preview of division’s upcoming best of three of championship series, Luke Arnold singled home Luke Logan in the bottom of the sixth inning to send the Fountain Valley Twins to victory over the Fountain Valley Angels at Mile Square Park.

Twins lead-off batter Jake Bitzer hit his league-leading seventh home run of the season in the bottom of the first inning. Bitzer also doubled and scored a run. Both Jacob Richard and Chanson Ching had an RBI single and Tanner Motske had two hits and recorded the pitching win in a relief effort.

Jon Kerchenfaut had an RBI double and Anthony Meneses an RBI single for the Angels.

Tigers 4, Twins 2: Jake Bitzer and Luke Wells had RBIs for the Fountain Valley Twins in their loss to the Costa Mesa National LSU Tigers at TeWinkle Park in Costa Mesa. Bitzer also struck out seven in four innings on the mound.

Softball

In the girls’ 8-and-Under Silver division championship game of the Oceanside Riptide Girls Softball Tournament on Sunday, South Huntington Beach defeated Huntington Beach, 11-2, at Capistrano Park. South Huntington Beach pitcher Hannah Canfield threw a one-hitter in the title game.

South Huntington Beach went 4-0 at the tournament and outscored its opponents, 45-2. The Wipeout roster is: Canfield, Emily Elliott, Erin Bunker, Gillian Gordon, Jacquelyn Gordon, Kate Terrigno, Katie Volk, Kristen Hansen, Olivia Loomis, Savanna Starks, Sophia Knight and Jillian Reichert. The team is coached by Greg Bunker, Van Starks and Gregg Knight.
