The Marina High girls’ track and field team came up with the highest finish in the program’s history by placing fifth in Division 1 at the CIF Southern Section Track and Field Championships on Saturday Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut.

Senior Laura Hollander won her first individual CIF title by winning the Division 1 girls’ 3,200 meters (10 minutes, 27.51). Hollander nearly took another event and finished second in the girls’ 1,600 (4:50.12). Hollander, who signed with Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, is the Marina record-holder in both the girls’ 1,600 and 3,200 events, Vikings distance coach David Sanford said.

“Laura has an amazing work ethic and dedication to her sport that has put her at the top,” Sanford said.

Also in the girls’ 1,600, the Vikings’ Kylie Nishisaka took fifth and senior Emily Taylor was seventh. Nishisaka’s time of 4:56.02 was a 2.5 seconds improvement of the junior’s previous best time in the event, Sanford said.

The Division 1 girls’ team standings also included Edison in 18th place and Huntington Beach right behind the Chargers in 19th place. In the Division 1 boys’ standings, Huntington was 29th and Edison 33rd.

Hollander and Nishisaka advanced to Friday’s CIF Southern Section Masters Meet at Cerritos College in Norwalk. Hollander qualified in both the girls’ 1,600 and 3,200, but Sanford said Tuesday that Hollander will not compete in the 1,600 and focus on just the 3,200.

Nishisaka was an alternate in the 1,600 but is now in Friday’s race.

Taylor also finished fourth in the girls’ 800 and is an alternate for the Masters Meet.

“Kylie has had to overcome some health issues early in the season but has come on strong at the right time,” Sanford said. “Emily is a fantastic athlete that has thrived this year.”

Seniors Karen Snapper of Edison and Amy Loschiavo of Huntington Beach also qualified for the Masters Meet and will compete in the girls’ pole vault. Listed as an alternate in the Masters Meet is Edison junior Jeff Thies in the boys’ 3,200.
