Three locals win CIF titles

The CIF Southern Section Division 1 Swimming and Diving Championships wrapped up three days of competition Friday at Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool in Long Beach, where several local athletes won individual CIF titles.

In the girls’ team standings, Edison finished fourth and Fountain Valley was eighth in a division won by University.

In the boys’ team standings, Edison placed sixth, Huntington Beach was 30th and Fountain Valley 46th in a division won by Loyola.

Marina senior Nick Soedel won a CIF title in the boys’ 100 free (45.05 seconds) and placed sixth (20.82) in the boys’ 50 free. Fountain Valley senior Shelby Webber was a CIF champion in both the girls’ 200 IM (2:00.28) and 100 free (49.90).

Princeton-bound Michael Hauss of Edison won the 200 free in a personal-best time of 1:38.14, the second-fastest time for an Edison swimmer, Coach Diggy Riley said. Hauss also placed sixth in the 100 free (45.66), which also is the second-fastest all-time time at Edison.

Edison junior Josh Smith won the consolation final in the 100 free in 45.95, the third-fastest time for the program. Smith also set a school record time (49.93) and placed third in the 100 backstroke.

Hauss and Smith teamed with Brent Bazzell and Brett Maus to finish third in the 400 free relay (3:06.80). The Chargers’ 200 free relay squad of Maus, Bazzell, Brian Ely and Hauss, finished sixth with a school record time of 1:25.96.

Huntington Beach’s boys’ 200 free relay team of juniors Noah Harrison, Griffin Camps, Jameson Shively and Max Schulz, finished 14th (1:28.34).

Freshman Devin Newton of Edison won the consolation final in the girls’ 200 individual medley with a personal- best 2:05.88 (third all-time time at Edison). Newton also placed 11th in the 100 back (57.58), which ranks second all-time for Edison.

Edison senior Alli Gillespie, who is headed to Oregon State, placed fifth in the 100 free (51.51) and 11th in the 200 free (1:52.42). Also for the Chargers, sophomore Kylie Boyce (1:04.74) and senior Sarah Moss (1:06.21) placed ninth and 11th, respectively, in the girls’ 100 breaststroke.

For Fountain Valley, junior Taylor Johnson was fifth (23.84) in the girls’ 50 free, sophomore Jamie Dang took third (56.95) in the girls’ 100 butterfly and the Barons’ girls’ 200 free relay team of Webber, freshman Sarah Yo, Dang and Johnson went 1:36.15 for third place.

“You have to give University girls’ team props,” Riley said. “They swam unbelievable at prelims. I doubt that even if we would have swam to our potential that we would have beaten them.

“Our boys came into CIF focused on being relaxed and confident. We saw school records fall and some of the fastest swims in Edison history. We could not be more proud of the way they performed in the biggest meet of the year.”

Boys’ Tennis

Sunset League champion Marina was eliminated Friday after falling, 10-8, to Santa Barbara in a Division 1 second-round match. The Vikings dropped two tie-breakers (7-6, 7-6) in the match.

The Dons were led by the top singles player Chris Grant, who defeated Marina’s Parker Glore, Kevin Young and Daniel Cancilla. Glore and Young both won their two other sets and the Vikings’ top doubles team of Roy Nielsen and Toma Hamerlink, also won two sets.

“I am very proud of the team,” Marina Coach Bruce Beutler said. “We were 18-2 this season. I will miss six of our starting seniors next year who have been on the varsity the last four years.”

Glore and Young and Nielsen/Hamerlink will compete Friday at the CIF Individuals Sectionals. The singles tournament starts at 8:30 a.m. at Corona del Mar and the doubles tournament at 10:30 p.m. at Newport Bluffs.

Boys’ Golf

Four Sunset League players — Jesse Heinrichs (Marina, 73), Andre Vu (Fountain Valley, 75), John Lee (Los Alamitos, 77) and Jonathan Young (Los Alamitos, 77) — turned in strong performances Monday at the CIF Southern Section Individuals at Skylinks Golf Course in Long Beach.

Heinrichs started out three-putting the first two holes for bogeys, but birdied the last hole out of the sand to finish with a 1 over par 73, said Marina Coach Jim Morris, who called Heinrich’s performance a “very gritty round for a young man who was our No. 4 player for the season.”

“He has taken his game to another level in the postseason,” Morris said.

Vu finished tied for 18th and Lee and Young tied for 27th.

The Sunset foursome finished among the top 37 out of a field of 104 and advanced to compete Monday at the CIF-SS Individual Final at Industry Hills Golf Course (Zaharias course).

Lacrosse

Huntington Beach saw its season come to an end in a 7-5 loss at No. 2-seed St. Margaret’s in the second round of the playoffs. Tim Francis scored two goals and AJ Schaffner, Jace Gan and Steven Koressel had one goal each. Oilers goalie Trevor Jackson had six saves.
